hello all. I seem to have confused myself!!! (doesn't take much). I have a ECS MCP61M-M3(v1.0) motherboard. I checked a couple of sites to see what ram I needed and what the maximum amount was that my MB would take, it said 8GB. At present I have 6GB 1x4gb 1x2GB. I recently purchased 2x4GB Corsair XMS3 DDR3 TW3X4G1333C9A sticks of ram. When I put them in the motherboard it only registers 4GB in system information. I took them out again and tried them one at a time and it registers 4GB. I tried one of them with my old 4GB stick and it registers 6GB, I also tried one with my 2GB stick and that only registers 4GB? Im not techno minded so I'm confused!!!! Can anyone tell me what it is I'm doing wrong or what I need to do please? many thanks maria

Do you know which CPU processor is fitted? That may be a limiting factor as to why it won't recognise the full 8GB.

 

I assume it is a 64bit operating system as 32bit wouldn't recognise the 6GB.

 

There may also need to be something resetting in the BIOS, though the spec for the motherboard doesn't give any information to show that.

I must just add my motherboard is MCP61M-M3(V1.0) all the searches I do take me to the same motherboard which is MCP61M-M3(V1.0A) I don't know what the difference is between the (V1.0) and the (V1.0A)

Hi Maria, I don't think there will be much difference between the  (V1.0) and the (V1.0A) though I can't be sure of course.

 

I have looked at the spec for the processor and can't find any mention of a limiting factor for how much RAM it can handle, so again not sure if that is the cause.

 

I am hoping another member might have a bit more knowledge here as I can't see any reason why the system won't recognise the full 8GB unless there is something needs tweaking or changing in the BIOS, have you tried looking there?

Hi, I have now looked at the spec for the RAM sticks themselves, (Should have done that earlier, sorry)

 

What I see for that model number is a kit of 2 x 2GB. Are you sure each of the two you have bought are 4GB?

You did say you had tried each one, did the system definitely say that it was seeing 4GB for each stick when tried one at a time?

 you no something I think you are right!!! DOH. the sticks I have 2 sticks and this is what each one says CORSAIR XMS3 TW3X4133C9A 133MHz 4GB (2x2GB) I foolishly assumed that each stick was 4GB!!! Thank you Nev I will go order some more. do you know what the max is for my MB? some sites say 8GB some say 16GB? many thanks for your patience and time, maria

Hi before you go buying more, just try one stick in on its own, then see what the computer tells you is actually there, let's be sure before buying more. I am not too familiar with this type of RAM, it may actually mean the stick itself does have two sets of 2GB built into it.

I tried that after reading your last post and it does say 2GB in system information. It doesn't take much to confuse me but that wrote on the ram I would say is misleading

OK, at least we have the answer now, you should hopefully be able to return it, maybe even as part exchange for what you really want.

 

Oh the question about how much RAM the motherboard will work with, I suggest the 8GB is possibly the real value, the only way to be sure with conflicting different specifications is to send a mail to the manufacturers with all the numbers actually on your motherboard, and ask them.
