So just yesterday I got my first BSOD in a very long time. I downloaded BlueScreen View to view the minidump file and saw it was caused by these two files:

atikmdag.sys

ntoskrnl.exe

The first one I think is from AMD, I do have an AMD card (Radeon HD 7800 Series). I thought maybe it was just a fluke so I ignored it and said I would worry about it if it happened again. Well, today it occured for a second time. I don't have the first original minidump file because I accidently deleted, but the 2nd minidump file shows the same files as the cause of the crash. I'm not sure if the crash is caused by bad driver files from AMD or not, but I figured I would make a thread to be sure. I do have my graphic drivers up to date (as well as everything else like Windows updates, etc).

I didn't make any changes hardware-wise as of late. I did update Adobe Flash the other day (which seems to be crashing once a day).

Specs:

Win 7 64bit, AMD FX-4170, 8GB Memory, AMD Radeon HD 7800 Series, Samsung SSD 840 Pro

I tried to attach the minidump file but got an error saying I am not permitted to upload that kind of file. Info from BlueScreen View:

Hello Echoes....I searched that error message you have, and there is a large number of people out there that have the same problem. Evidently, from what I can discern, ATI / AMD knows about this bug but has done nothing about it for years. Some have fixed the problem, others try the same fix and fail. My first suggestion is to check the video card driver number, then go to ATI's site and look for updated drivers for your model card (should be higher numbers if they have been updated) and download them. Then totally remove all your current video card drivers, and reinstall the new ones and reboot. There is no guarantee that will work, but it certainly won't hurt either.

**BTW..... before you do this, make a complete image backup of your entire drive in case things go south on you; you can always restore if the sytem corrupts & crashes. If you don't have a backup system at this time, I suggest Macrium Reflect free edition, and back up to an external drive the same or smaller size as your main hard drive. Do not fail to do this.

Yeah I am going to unstaill all the AMD drivers and reinstall the latest drivers. There is a beta driver dated from August. I currently have drivers from July right now. I hope it works.

I don't know why but I think it has something to do with Flash and hardware acceleration on Flash.

For the .dmp file, you need to zip it first then upload the .zip file.

Ok here is the minidmp file.

Also meant to mention: The BSOD both times that it happened seemed to occur when I would return to my PC after being idle for a bit. I don't let me PC go into sleep or shut down after a certain time, everything remains on. And both times when I would return to my PC, I would move the mouse, the screen froze and the bluescreen appeared.

Dump partially agrees with BluescreenView:

atikmdag.sys

but it also points to the FlashPlayerPlu process. Most likely the video driver though.

Yeah I think it may have been AMD/Flash.

I uninstalled both and did a clean install and so far no problems. Will report back should anything occur.

Thanks for the help!

Well, the BSOD started happening again. I was fine for about two weeks, then all of a sudden tonight it occured for the first time since.

Also should note that again I wasn't doing anything, left my system on idle for a few hours (just had Firefox opened to Facebook). When I came back and switched tabs, the system crashed.

It's so odd that moving the mouse and opening a new tab on Firefox is the cause for the crash. Very odd.

I attached the minidump file and it appears it is the same two drivers as before.

I already did a system clean (uninstalled Adobe Flash, did a clean install. Same thing for my AMD video drivers). I do believe this has something to do with Flash/and AMD clashing. Maybe I am wrong, but Adobe Flash keeps crashing at least once a day for me. It was fine for a little bit after the clean install but then continued to crash again.

What else can I do?

Go into Firefox, click on settings, then advanced and disable hardware acceleration.

There also isn't much in the dump file you uploaded as minidumps hardly ever contain a lot of information.

Could we have a Kernel memory dump?

Go the Start
Right click My Computer
Select Properties
Click Advanced system settings
Click on the Advanced tab
Select Settings under Startup and Recovery
Then under Write debugging information select Kernel memory dump.

Once a dump is created go to:

C:\Windows\memory.dmp

Copy the file to the desktop, zip it up and upload it to a file sharing site like Onedrive. After the upload is done post the download link in your next reply.

Thanks for the reply.

I already have hardware acceleration disabled on Firefox. I am thinking I should disable hardware acceleration on Flash. I haven't done that yet, but may if another crash occurs.

Right now I have done another clean install of both Flash and AMD drivers. So far ok.

I tried to create that Memory.dmp file, but when I go into the Windows folder the file is no where to be seen. I did happen to run CCleaner as I was doing the clean install of Flash/AMD so that is likely why it's not creating the memory.dmp file. I thought Minidump files were best key to analyzing a blue screen error. The next time I get a BSOD I will create a memory.dmp file immediately.

The memory.dmp file will be created automatically the next time a BSOD occurs.

Yeah I will post the memory.dmp file the next time a BSOD occurs. It's strange how a clean install will be ok for awhile then all of a sudden things start getting messed up.

Like, I haven't had Flash crash on me yet. And it usually does at least once a day. Odd.

I will post back if a BSOD occurs again.

Thanks again for the help.
