Hey guys, I made a thread about my computer going into a boot loop here, http://www.geekstogo...-code-50/page-2. I did have some viruses but we were not able to confirm if it was the viruses that caused the boot loop, one thing Emeraldnzl mentioned was the hard drive could of caused the issue. Then this happend yesterday, quote is from the previous thread

 

I'm pretty sure it's the hard drive, I was trying to shut down the pc yesterday and it would shut down, I'd hit the button and nothing would happen. So I decided to leave it, I thought it was still closing some processes or something, I walk away to do something and I hear the fans speed up and get really loud. When I got to the PC it was a black screen with white writing saying something along the lines of 'select boot device, when selected or inserted hit any key' When I hit any key It would just repeat the same message underneath the original.

Does this confirm it is the hard drive, It's working fine now.

 Emeraldnzl mentioned that I should try seatools to check the state of the drive, however seatools cannot find the hard drive even though when booting the computer normally it find the drive fine. The hard drive is under warranty this is just about confirming if the hard drive is the issue.

Please provide the brand and model name or number for the MB, HDD and PSU, can you also provide a screenshot of Disk Manager for us

 

1.        Click on the Start button and then choose Control Panel.

2.        Click on the System and Security link.

Note: If you're viewing the Large icons or Small iconsview of Control Panel, you won't see this link so just click on the Administrative Tools icon and skip to Step 4.

3.        In the System and Security window, click on the Administrative Tools heading located near the bottom of the window.

4.        In the Administrative Tools window, double-click on the Computer Management icon.

5.        When Computer Management opens, click on Disk Management on the left side of the window, located under Storage.

After a brief loading period, Disk Management should now appear on the right side of the Computer Management window.

Note: If you don't see Disk Management listed, you may need to click on the |> icon to the left of the Storage icon.

 

To capture and post a screenshot;

 

Click on the ALT key + PRT SCR key..its on the top row..right hand side..now click on start...all programs...accessories...paint....left click in the white area ...press CTRL + V...click on file...click on save...save it to your desktop...name it something related to the screen your capturing... BE SURE TO SAVE IT AS A .JPG ...otherwise it may be to big to upload... then after typing in any response you have... click on browse...desktop...find the screenshot..select it and click on the upload button...then on the lower left...after it says upload successful...click on add reply like you normally would.

Do you happen to know which SATA port the HDD is connected to on the MB.

 

It may or may not be related but your free storage space on the C: drive is getting too low, in order to avoid data corruption and/or mechanical HDD failure for data only HDDs you must always have a minimum of 10% of the HDDs overall storage capacity available as free space and between 20 and 25% of a HDDs overall storage capacity available as free space if the OS is on it, the free space allows for information to be copied to and from the drive efficiently and it reduces the risk of the OS being overwritten/becoming corrupted by a simple task such as installing a Windows or a third party software update.

Not having the above can render a computer inoperable if the HDD concerned has the OS on it due to the MBR (Master Boot Record) becoming damaged/corrupt, please see information @ http://pcsupport.abo...sterbootrec.htm

 

Which Seatools test have you tried as in Seatools for Windows or SeaTools for DOS

I will defiantly try to clear out some space on the PC, thanks for that advice. I'm not sure what the hard drive is plugged into on the MB, I had the pc constructed for me. I just checked and it seems to be plugged into the white space to the left of the sata3 ports. Seen here https://www.pccasege...M-D3H-large.jpg sorry I couldn't be of more help. I did Seatools for DOS by burning it to a disc from the .iso file.

Let us know if you need help with removing surplus data on the HDD.

 

SATA 3 port 0, 1 or 2 should be fine for connecting a HDD that has an OS on it.

 

Give SeaTools for Windows a try.

I should be fine with removing data, i've got steam uninstalling games right now. 

 

I'm running the tests now on Seatools, it's already failed the short drive self test, the log doesn't say why just the time and date it failed. It's passed smart test and short generic test, running long generic now.

I would leave any further testing until you have freed up enough disk space, this will give you a more reliable result, the drive may not pass because it is cluttered for example.

I've got 35% free, do you think that's enough or should I keep going before doing more tests?

Even at 35% free space the hard drive has still failed the short drive test and the long generic test.

Before returning the drive I would try both swapping the port that it is connected to on the MB and another SATA lead, rerun the tests and if the drive again fails RMA it, if you are able to print off the results and send a copy along with the drive.

 

NB: When swapping the ports and SATA cables make sure that everything is connected securely, a loose connection can cause such issues.

Hey I just wanted to run some things by you before I changed ports. There are two cables plugged into some sort of adapter to the left on the sata3 ports, is this sata0, (is it even an adapter or is it part of the MB). I would have to remove the graphics card to get the cables out of there, something which i'm rather apprehensive about doing, any tips so I don't mess it up? And if the white thing is an adapter would I need to take it off and put it on the sata 3 ports, or am I fine to just plug the 2 cables into the 2 sata3 ports.

Correct, your connections are to ports 0 and 1 where they should be and they are connected with a terminal block which is good, I would not go to the trouble of partially dismantling the computer but instead start the warranty procedure for the HDD, it is the safest option as it reduces the risk of any possible mishaps.
