Hi There, I have stumbled across this forum trying to find an answer to my problem, so I hope yopu can help me,as I am at the end of my tech knowledge.

I started my pc up the other day and got this message-

windows could not start because the following file is missing or corrupt:

windows root>\system32\ntoskrnl.exe.

It also seems to have effected the keyboard? I inserted the xp recovery disc and got the press r for recovery etc but it wouldn't reconise that I had pressed any key, it was the same when I swapped over to a new keyboard, I even tried using a different hard drive, and re ran the the disc but still no keyboard, is my pc completely dead?

Wireless, USB or PS2 (round connector).

Hi ztrucker

the I've tried 2 keyboards a PS2 type and a usb type and neither worked, I haven't got a wireless one to try although I don't think the unit is wireless enabled to be honest. I don't have the model number of the pc but it is a Compaq presario brought about 8 years ago it's running windows media centre and has a AMD 64,

Try doing a power reset:

Do the following:

• Power down the computer.
• Unplug the power cord.
• Open the computer case.
• Remove the CMOS battery
• Press and hold the power button for 10 to 15 seconds.
• Insert the CMOS battery.
• Plug in the power cord.
• Power up the computer.

You will get a CMOS checksum error message.
Press F1 to continue.
Press F2 to enter Setup.

Please Press F2 to enter Setup.
Load defaults or Optimized defaults.
Set date and time.
Save and exit.

Ok tired that and still nothing, a different screen came up but when I pressed F1 or F2 it didn't respond,  I tried both keyboards, I think it's doooomed

How much RAM does it have?

 

Disconnect everything except mouse, keyboard and display.

Try removing 1/2 and test, If the same, swap ram and test again.

 

Also look closely at the capacitors on the motherboard, see if any are bulging or leaking. If yes  then the motherboard needs to be replaced.

I had double the ram installed a while back,so it's not huge but bigger than when you say disconnect everyting, what else is there to disconnect? At the moment it is set up in the shed with just the monitor,keybord and mouse connected, I will have a look at the motherboard capictors later on, thanks for your assistance with this
