I have a Toshiba laptop, model Satellite L455-S 5009 running Windows 7, and all of a sudden the volume does not work.  The sound icon still appears in my taskbar, but it has a red X through it.  I have tried the troubleshooter, it says 'no audio devices are installed".  This confuses me because I have not changed any settings, and it was working a day ago.

I went to the Toshiba website and tried downloading a Media control driver for a 64 bit, which I have.  I ran the download as administrator, restarted the computer, but the red X remains.

Is there anything else I can do?  Or could you  provide a link to the right driver I should be downloading?

Thanks!

Post a snapshot of a full screen Device Manager window:

To open Device Manager, press Windows key+r, type devmgmt.msc and press Enter or click GO. Make it full screen. Expand any sections with yellow or red marks in them.

See here for capturing the image: How to Use the Snipping Tool in Vista - Vista Forums (says it's for Vista but also works with Win 7/8).

Just after I posted this, I decided I had nothing to lose by running a system restore.  I did that, and it worked, I have sound back.  I have no idea what made it go away, but thank you for your reply.

Good work, glad it's fixed.
