Hello, I am a total newb to hardware and I know its a lot to ask but after a lot of hours of research I have put together a shopping list for my first computer that I want to build and I was hoping someone could look at it and make sure Im not making any really obvious, really stupid mistakes when it comes to compatibility and such:

I know I still need a power supply but I haven't looked yet to see what wattage I need yet and will be figuring it out when I get home. I already have a copy of Windows 8.1 ready for it. I know I could do better on some parts but Im hoping to stay around the $500 range for the bare minimum parts (as in no Solid State, blue ray drive, or wireless card).

 

I really appreciate any and all help or advice, even if its just general advice for a first time builder.

I found 2 things in your selections

 

1- Your ram choice is not listed in the QVL for your board, does not mean they will not work but a thing to consider

 

2- Your case as 2 front USB 3.0 ports but your motherboard only option are USB 2.0 midboard connection, it as 2 backpanel USB 3.0 connection but your front panel connection will only work at USB 2.0 even if they are able to accept the 3.0 version.

 

One other thing, depending on your usage and for what you will use your computer for is that your motherboard as only 4 sata ports so if you count your SSD and your HDD plus your Optical drive you will have only 1 sata port free for the future if you ever decide to add more drives to your computer.

Noted Alzeimer' comments, changed the case and RAM.

Although a 400 watt PSU would suit the build, it would prove to weak for higher end GPU if you upgraded, so included a 550 watt Gold rated one.

Need serious help. I am computer illiterate and bought a motherboard JUST because it lights up blue. The board is a z77a-gd65 with 2x2gb ram (installed correctly) and a phantom special edition shell and a cheap (old school) asus graphics card with an i3 ivy bridge processor powered by a naxn 500w psu. The problem is that the led 1 alarm comes on. The wires are hooked up properly (or so i think) in that area. I have had to switch the load amount on da psu from 115 ta 230. The motherboard kicks off when i put the cpu power cord into it. ANY suggestions or knowledge would be great, thanks!
