I removed some drives from an old server (Server 2003, 7200 rpm, RAID but don't know which one). When I connect them to a USB adaptor on a PC to reformat them, they don't show under Win7 nor XP. I hear the drive come on when I plug it in. Am I missing something? Thanks

Please provide the brand and model name or number details of the HDDs and the adapter that you are using.

 

Can I ask if this is your server, if not how did you come by it, do you know what OS (if any) is on the HDD/s, I ask this in case they are security protected.

The drives are Seagate Barracuda 7200.10, 250GB SATA. The USB adaptor is a brand x I got somewhere but has worked faithfully for 2 years. I hear the drive come on when plugged in, Windows shows the safe disconnect icon on the toolbar, but Disk Management doesn't show anything.

 

They were in my own 2003 server and don't have any security. They appear to be workstation drives.

They were striped in RAID. The HDD diagram on the outside shows I can add a jumper block to restrict it to 1.5 Gb/s from 3 Gb/s but I can't imagine that's the problem. There's no jumper now.

 

I hate to pitch them. I can load some old backups on them even at only 250GB.

Update: After your post I thought I'd repeat my process (4th time). Same steps. This time it was recognized, but I don't know why. It asked to be initialized which worked, but a quick format failed. I'm trying the long format this time which if I remember takes hours even on a small drive... I hate long formats. I'll let you know what happens. If it works on this HDD, maybe it will work on the other 5 (those failed to be recognized also).
