Gday.
Restart the computer and enter the BIOS, > tab along to the exit menu, > look for, Load Default Setting, > click it, > Press F10 to Save Settings and exit.
If no luck.
Please list your other hardware in your next reply, MB,CPU, PSU.

Did you take anti static precautions before handling all hardware.
Was the voltage increased in the BIOS at all.
Please confirm or correct the following for us please;
The original Ram is 1.5V and the new Ram is 1.65V.
Try removing all of the Ram and restarting the computer to see if you get any error beeps, while you are there check all internal connections are secure and reseat the add on video card.
Post back with the results for us.

Can you post links to the two sets of Ram for us please.
Did you check all internal connections (especially the main ATX power and the CPU power connections).
What are the MBs onboard error LEDs showing.
Just for confirmation, did your MB previously emit a single error beep when POST completed.

Before pronouncing R.I.p., have the tried te following.
With pc off, pressing the Clear CMOS button?
Connecting a PS/2 keyboard? At Boot, tapping F2 loads default settings.
Any info on Post Port Debug LED?
Any LEDS lit on LED Status Indicators? the LEDs near the 24pin ATX connector>
Edit.
Thanks for jumping in Phillpower2..

The renegade memory is
1 of G.Skill 8GB (1 x 8GB) DDR3 PC3-14900 RipjawsX Series (10-11-10-30) Single module Desktop Memory Model F3-14900CL10S-8GBXL swapped for 2x4 Ripjaws DDR3 PC3-12800 Series (9-9-9-24). This is when everything started to go haywire. I cleared the CMOS but not with the computer off. Start up leds are 68 and after 10 secs displays E8. No hard drive led activity. Usb modem lights up though. No loose cables anywhere. Mobo is E657 EVGA P55, SLI, Bios A70. Processor make is Intel core i5 670 @2.80ghz. Had two beeps at start up with the previous working memory, one for the bios an one for the usb modem I think.
Computer is now completely dismantled. On the brink of ordering a replacement mobo from NewEgg.

I intend to reassemble and see if everything is still good to go
Do you mean using the existing MB?
As you have the parts on the bench, can you try the following and see if you get the same E8 error code at the end.
Computer off, CPU installed, monitor, keyboard plugged into a top USB port on the back of the computer, Press the clear CMOS button for ten seconds, power on,
After you seee the Logo flash up, start tapping F2 to load default setting.
any beeps, LED code?
Then test with 1 original stick of RAM in slot one, Code?
then same stick of RAM in slot 2. Code?
Trying to determine if a slot/MB issue or a CPU one.
Is the board past a possible RMA date?

According to the user manual this mobo supports up to 4g modules in the DIMM slots-I tried installing 8g. The board is 3 yrs old-so no RMA. The no boot-no post issue is likely the result of damage to the memory slots. Sometimes a stressful life can make you do weird things.
