Hello,

I hope someone can help me with this problem.

I have a EI System EI 104 desktop, the hard drive failed so i bought a new HD which is a ATA/IDE hd.

I am trying now to reinstall the OS but when it gets to boot from CD,all it does is give me Disk Boot Failure, insert system disk and press enter.

What can i do,i already have system disk inserted.

Please can someone help me with this.

Thanks and much appreciated in advance.

What operating system are you trying to install and is it 32 or 64 bit?

Where did you get the install media?

Did you set the jumpers on the new drive to match the setting from the old drive (Slave, Master, Cable Select (CS))?

Does the hard drive show in BIOS Setup?

Does the Optical drive show in BIOS Setup?

Vista home premium 32 bit

Digital river,i download iso and burned to disc,or i can use original disc.

I have set the jumpers exactly as the old hd was.

Both hd and optical show in bios.

Hi, the only thing I can see is the downloaded ISO file may not have been burned as a bootable image, if it was only as data then that will be why it is being refused. How did you burn the disk?

Hi, OK and the disk being used before now noted, therefore I assume that you also selected to boot from the DVD drive in the BIOS. the only other thing I can think of is a problem with the DVD drive itself. Have you checked things like connections to the DVD drive and the other end on the mother board which might have been disturbed when you replaced the hard drive. Those IDE wide ribbon cables are notorious for becoming dislodged from their connections.

Generally if you have the unit set to boot from cd/dvd, then you should be asked a question a long the lines of "boot from cd"?

Are you getting this? If so you need to hit the enter key.

Can you boot the DVD on another computer to test it? If it works then it sounds like your DVD drive has gone bad. Are you sure it's a DVD drive and not just a CD drive? I've done this a couple times recently :(

Do you have a 4GB or larger flash drive? If so you can use Rufus to make it a bootable Vista Install flash drive.

Hello,

Yes i can boot the dvd in another computer with no problems.Yes it is only CD drive and not DVD,and i agree i think it has gone bad.

I will try Rufus and make the bootable flash drive.

Thanks for the suggestion.

Hello,

I have made bootable flash drive with rufus, but it seems desktop does not support booting from usb.

so my only option is CD.

But how do you put a windows installation on to a 700mb CD.

Thanks in advance for any help.

Hello,

Just an update,

Getting windows installation on 700mb CD is impossible, logically can't get 2.5gb onto 700mb CD.

I hooked up a different drive (dvd) and got it to boot but once it gets to the point when i need to click next and install,

the mouse or keyboard fail to work, but yet the keyboard worked when i needed to hit a key to boot from CD.

This is puzzling, why they fail to work.
