After I install service pack 2 for XP home edition, whenever I go into my computer, control panel, my network places and others I get a error message saying dr watson postmortem dugger has encounted an error blah blah blah, then crashes my computer and I need to restart it, I followed all your instructions and got so annoyed that I done a total system restore on my comp however im still getting the same thing happen to me. I uninstalled service pack 2 for the mean time but I would like to have it on there and without all these probs. here is a hjt log hope someone can help me. thanks in advance.

Close HiJackThis.

First, download, install, and run CleanUp! (so the scan won't take as long because cleanup will clear temporary files) *NOTE* Cleanup deletes EVERYTHING out of temp/temporary folders. If you have anything in a temp folder, backup it up or move it to a permanent folder prior to running Cleanup!

Please download Ewido Security Suite

• Install ewido security suite
• Launch ewido, there should be a big E icon on your desktop, double-click it.
• The program will prompt you to update click the OK button
• The program will now go to the main screen

You will need to update ewido to the latest definition files.

• On the left hand side of the main screen click update
• Click on Start

The update will start and a progress bar will show the updates being installed.

Once the updates are installed do the following:

• Reboot into Safe Mode, you can do this by restarting your computer, then contiunally tapping F8 until a menu appears. Use your up arrow key to highlight Safe Mode, then hit enter. Then, run Ewido.
• Click on scanner
• Make sure the following boxes are checked before scanning:
  • Binder
  • Crypter
• Click on Start Scan
• Let the program scan the machine

While the scan is in progress you will be prompted to clean the first infected file it finds. Choose "clean", then put a check next to "Perform action on all infections" in the left corner of the box so you don't have to sit and watch Ewido the whole time. Click OK.

Once the scan has completed, there will be a button located on the bottom of the screen named Save report

• Click Save report
• Save the report to your desktop

Reboot into normal mode.

Then, please run this online virus scan:
ActiveScan

Save the results from ActiveScan.

I need you to post the log from Ewido, the log from ActiveScan and a new HiJackThis log into this topic.

I don't see any evidence of the infection that causes the Dr Watson error message so it may be something which is not related to malware.

Let's try cleaning out your registry:

*Please dowload: RegSeeker.
*Click on "Clean The Registry" in the left panel.
*Check all boxes (make sure the backup box in the lower left corner is selected!).
*After it runs, click "Select All" on the bottom, then right-click on any selected item in the window and select "Delete Selected Items".
*Click "Quit RegSeeker".

Now, open any of your installed programs, and make sure that everything opens ok. If so, reboot, then go back and run the RegSeeker again, do the same thing again if anything is found. *Make sure to reboot between each use of the program. Run the program until there are none to very few items left. You may need to run it 5 or 6 times at least.

No, it doesn't matter that you uninstalled Service Pack 2 after getting the problem.

Try running the registry cleaner, if you haven't yet.

Next, I would like you to create a new account on your computer:

Go to Start > Control Panel

Double-click on "User Accounts"

Go to "Create a New Account" type the new name for the account, then click the Next button. Choose "Computer Administrator", then click "create account". Now reboot your computer and log onto the new account you just created.

Let me know if you can access everything without the Dr. Watson error message.

Then that means your original user account has become corrupt.

We will need to move your data from the old account to the new account, then delete the old account.

First, I need you to create a new account (the same way as previously - so that you have 3 accounts). Log-in to the newest 3rd account and let me know when you're there and I will tell you the steps to take to move your data (it's not as hard and won't take as long as it sounds )

If you didn't do it already, make sure to run Cleanup on the old (original) user account because you don't want to have to transfer all of those temporary Internet files.

Ok, logged onto the 3rd account:

Open Windows Explorer (Start > All Programs > Accessories > Windows Explorer)
Go up to "Tool > Folder Options".
Click the "View" tab - then click "Show Hidden Files and Folders".
UNcheck "Hide protected operating system files" Click OK.

Navigate to C:\Documents and Settings\Old_Username

Old_Username is whatever the name of the user account that has the Dr Watson error message.

Let me know when that's done.
