PC Unable to fill out forms

I am currently trying to take an on-line course which requires me to insert appropriate answers on a pre-arranged form. Cursor will not blink on where I am supposed to enter text, nor will pc allow me to change fonts. I can do most everything else. I had that problem last year and was advised by tecnhical help at the course website to do something with Java or somewhat similar application, but I don't remember what it was.
