Ok so I have I'm not sure is a unique problem, but an annoying one. I have built an entire brand new system (woooo hooo first one since 98) Regardless, I didn't use either of the 80gig quamtam drives I had in the older machine. One I know has a virus I can't find and the other its just not worth it with 2 x 1tb in the new system...My problem being is that both Quamtam drives have been partitioned into 3 lots entirely the same c:OS. d: saved info...E: downloads/internet...I need to get the saved infor off both drives that I need without hopefully having to hook up and swap power, monitor and other functions to use that computer on and off from the new one.....2 my problem is getting the saved info off the virused drive without compromising my new drive...So far my the only option my blank brain is coming up with is a jump drive and save it to there which would still require hooking the machine up somehow....

Anyone with ideas I would be greatly appreciated...thank you very much

ok so do I put the data on that machine? sorry a little new to the newer tech....like I said I have just been updating the computer I rebuilt in 98 so this is actually the newest thing I own....I dont even own a smart anything llololol old in the britches....lol   could you explain it a little more please../......it does seem easier then the method I had been doing of temp hooking up the old computer to mouse/monitor/etc....putting certain files on jump drives and saving them then unhooking the computer again....I did have a plug that let me share monitor/key/mouse with two computers but i have gotten rid of most of my older equipment in my move

 Looking for what interface the Quantum drives use, seems like they are tape drives??   do you know the model number? 

Does your old computer boot OK?   Does it have a USB port?

no they aren't tape drives....the are 80gig each Quantum drives....least I believe i remember they are quantum.....have to pull them out....old computer has usb ports and running windows xp sp3.....i'm just finding it a long process to save all the info I need of both drives off the old computer like pics and music and such by doing it by using 16 gig usb drives....plus I don't think there's a way I can run malware and virus removal off the usb drives after I save the info

i'm a big fan of docking stations over caddies, lot easier to use in my opinion.

not suggesting you actually buy that one, just giving you an idea of what they look like, and giving you extra options.

 

all you'd do is take the drives out of the old pc, slide it into the top of the caddy in it's correct slot, (depending on sata or ide connection of the drive.) then plug it into your new pc and access all the data on the drive, pull it and then insert the 2nd drive and repeat.

more or less it's exactly the same process to access the data as if you were using a flash drive when you connect a hard drive in a caddy/enclosure or docking station.

 

 

don't forget to use your anti virus to scan the drives first as soon as you connect them (no matter what you use.) then it should be safe to transfer all your data across without any problems.

well to be honest phill, deserves the praise i just passed along his link.

 

caddies are great if your going to be using the drive as a mobile drive,

but for home use i much prefer docking stations, saved me loads of time over the years.

ok well the drives I have are....Hitatchi Desktstar 82.3gig ATA/IDE    and Barracuda ATA/IDE 80Gig...if they just slide in or plug into that machine then I use the USB on new machine that would be a life saver......thank you SO much for the advice.....I will look into getting that one or one like it after looking at the best to suit my needs..

yes your drives would just slide into the top in the first slot, the dock then has a power plug usually that needs to be connected.

to access your data just plug either it's usb cable into the usb port of your new pc or if your new pc has one, the esata cable into it's esata port for faster data transfer speeds, and it's as simple as that.

After you have used your usual anti virus to scan a drive/s, use a on demand scanner as additional safety.  

The one I use, once a weekon the bBoot drive, is Malwarebytes free ver. > https://www.malwarebytes.org/.  You will still need your active anti virus running, on demand scanners only run when required to inspect a drive/folder/file.

Ya I'm kinda um anal about running malware and a couple antivirus scans on anything....and as soon as I get that machine i'll let ya know how it gets on
