I really do not know anything about that program, but it appears mainly suited for Ubuntu, not Windows. You might make the situation worse. At this point, all we can do is try different utilities with the hope that something will finally work. I have had successes and failures both when pulling data off corrupted partitions. Sometimes they work, sometimes they don't .

First, disconnect from the internet, then turn off any firewall and antivirus you have running. I have had the experience that sometimes they interfere with the process. Don't forget to turn them back on when you finish the session.

On the ubuntu program, I may have interpreted that differently and thought it would correct what was messed up with the grub and allow the pc basically to revert back to prior to the loading of ubuntu.

 

Yesterday, I loaded the Reatogo disk (with the bootable hard drive in place) and the bad disk connected via the sata enclosure. I powered on this drive only after the Reatogo was loaded.

 

under my computer the drive did not show

under test disk  it does show up. 

 

should i back and select that and see what happens?

I will also try your other suggestions.

Yes, try test disk; you can create a log file if you wish. I personally don't think it will provide any helpful information, but it won't hurt. When given the option, press P to make the partition Primary.

since we spoke last i had win 7  installed on the working hard drive and 2 extra gb on memory in the machine so i wont be fighting vista. i tried the knoppix and saw some file names but wasnt sure how to copy them or look at the files. i took the bad drive to a shop today and they were able to see file (but were empty) via a linux program. then they ran a windows program that  said it was fixing corrupt files. once that was done they went in thru windows and received a message that windows shut down incorrectly and the disk went thru self check and was able to boot again with all the files intact.
