Two messages come up every time I startup my PC.

1. Change Windows Update settings (important)

      *Install updates automatically (recommended)

2. Network firewall (important)

       *Turn on Norton Internet Security

Check that these are already turned on yet the messages continue

How do I get this to stop - seems like it is some kind of a virus/malware/etc.

I think you can right click on each and hide.

Yes I know that I can "hide" the messages from coming up, but this has just started (couple of weeks ago) after four years of ownership. Seems like that would just be hiding a problem in the software somewhere.

Is Windows Update set to Install updates automatically (recommended)?

No idea about Norton, never use it, Even though it's started, is it's Firewall enabled?

Yes - Windows update is turned on automatically.

Yes - Norton has all its check marks indicating on, and periodically I see an action taking place - so it is on.

Each time I check these items, I see they are on and that is all it takes to turn off the Action Center messages (without doing anything other than checking if on or off).

Like I said this is a fairly new problem which is why I suspect a bug in the system. But am clueless as to where to look or how to find it.

By the way - thanks so far.

Phil

I'd just hide those two and see if anything else pops up. If not then nothing to worry about.

You could run a scan with Norton and also download and run a scan with Malware Bytes Anti Malware free version. If you still suspect malware:

Go to the Virus, Spyware, Malware Removal forum, read the first post and follow instructions.

Come back here once you get a clean bill of health if you still have problems.

I followed your suggestion and used malwarebytes which took out about 320 findings. Since then, over the last two hours I have restarted my PC a few times and the problem no longer appears to be dogging me.

Thank you ever so much, you have been a tremendous help.

Hi, if Malwarebytes found that many unwanteds, I seriously recommend you follow the rest of Ztruker's advice to go to the malware removal forum and let the experts check your system, there may well be other things that Malwarebytes didn't find.

Most of what MBAM finds are what they call Optional and normally not necessary to remove. Removing that many can often damage the computer unless you know what each one is for.

Can't argue with success though.

Good luck.
