Not sure what has happened in the past 48 hours, but whenever I right single click on a picture or music file I get this noitfication:

 

The NVIDIA Display Panel extension cannot be created.

 

Possible reasons include:

Version mismatch.  Reinstalling display drivers may solve this problem.

 

Now does this require a complete Windows re-install?    How about a "Repair Install" Or where do I get the drivers from to re-install them.

No should not require a re install of windows. I would try to first look for most updated Graphics card drivers here http://www.nvidia.co...aspx?lang=en-us

Make sure to select correct operating system plus  64bit or 32bit whichever it is and correct model number of NVIDIA card you have.

 

See the Model number go to Device Manager under Display adapters, left click arrow, see the model of card there, Highlight the model, right click it, select properties, see if it says, " This device working properly "

Can also be a conflict with another NVIDIA driver if you have that may need updating. Even a possible Windows update.

 

Make sure to uninstall the previous NVIDIA driver software, then install the new one again.

After scan I was advised that I have the correct driver for my system. It says "This device is working properly"  Will do windows update.  Should I do a Java or NVIDIA update?

Try to first update NVIDIA. Believing has to do with your NVIDIA graphics card not java. When you right click on Desktop, select NVIDIA graphics settings check the Driver version there too.

 

What type of scan are you talking about ? Should always have Windows update set to check for updates. Java not such a secure program to have, do make sure to update it too if you use it a lot or advise to uninstall it.

 

Could be a conflict with something else, NVIDIA Message you get.

Under properties it says GeForce 6100 nForce405  307.83

 

When I open Control Panel>Add Remove Programs>Support it says "Ver. 1.3"

Looks like you have the latest drivers for this card  http://www.nvidia.co...aspx?lang=en-us

 

What you can try is to uninstall the original through add/remove programs in control panel, then reinstall it again, download in above link.

Was not sure if you had Windows XP 64bit or 32bit, so check the appropriate one. The blank Windows XP is 32bit, one in link i posted is 64bit.

 

During the install sometimes gives you a custom install option, can do this and check clean install to remove the other driver software at same time you reinstall.

Might or may not have this on the older driver software, but should,  just another way to do it, without having to uninstall first.

I noticed on my Control Panel that there are two folders, one being Desktop Manager Settings and one "NVDIDIA Control Panel".  When I uninstall NVIDIA using Add/Remove Programs, will that wipe out both folders from Control Panel?

For one you do not have to uninstall it this way through add/remove in Programs and features, when you download the newest driver software for NVIDIA, as said in Post # 8 you can use custom install option in NVIDIA driver software to do a clean install, wiping the older version and installing the newer version. See a check box in custom install window when you install the drivers.

 

For this Desktop Manager this must be some other software you have on system, not related to NVIDIA. I know of a Desktop Windows Manager, which controls stuff on desktop, is process that runs all the time in services, but never saw a setting for it in control panel, might be for Windows XP. Will not be affected or has anything to do with install or uninstall of NVIDIA Drivers.
