I recently upgraded my cpu,mobo,ram & storage. 

 

my new hardware: mobo> Gigabyte Z97 Gaming 5 mATX, 

             

                              CPU>  Intel Core i3 4150 

 

                              CPU cooler> Noctua L9i 

 

                              Ram> G.skill Eco 9-9-9-24 DDR3 1600mhz 1.35v their 2X2gb kits for a total of 8gb with 2 of those exact same ram kits.   

 

                              Storage: 250gb samsung 840 evo  

 

                              

 

My old hardware i carried over from previous upgrade

 

                              GPU> MSI GTX 650ti 1gb   : ( from what the spec sheet says this is a PCIE 3.0 gpu )

 

                              Storage : WD cavier black laptop hard drive 300gb & a G.skill pheonix 3 120gb ssd 

 

                              PSU Corsair MX430 watt 

 

 

My OS is windows 7 ultimate x64  

 

All drivers and OS are fully updated including the new gigabyte bios

 

My Issue  is i cannot run PCIE 3.0 setting, when i set it to 3.0 in the bios i then reboot the system and begin to receive lockups and the error message display driver has stopped responding. Now here is the strange part if i set the bios to PCIE 2.0 speed i reboot and then can play any game and run benchmarks no problem.

 

I have run memtest and stressed tested my new parts as i always do before the return policy's expire in case a component should fail. but i was wondering if anyone else has experienced this issue and how they fixed it or am i stuck with haveing to RMA the mobo ? or if it even is a mobo issue ??

You should not need to change any settings in the BIOS for the card to be automatically recognised as PCIE 3.0, make sure that the card is in the PCIE X16 slot that is the nearest one to the CPU, restart the computer and access the BIOS, select the restore factory defaults (sometimes listed as most stable settings) press F9 to save and exit and then F10 to confirm the settings, restart the computer and test.

 

Post back with an update when done and do not change any settings again meanwhile.

gpu is in correct pcie slot, i have tried load optimized defaults in the bios before with the only thing being changed were setting's regarding the memory profile for setting it to XMP and disabling integrated gaphics from the cpu since i have a dedicated gpu. And disabling all the power management settings since i want it to run full bore and optimal performance since its a gaming dedicated desktop setup. 

 

i dont have a logical explanation why it is working now after doing your recommendation as opposed to it not working before. One of the many mysterious plagues of system building i suppose. i played a few games and ran the latest furmark 4 times without any crashes or display driver error messages so maybe its resolved for now. I will post back if for some reason it starts doing it again but i used GPUZ to verify it was running at PCIE 3.0 x16. I will work on running some demanding games like crysis 3 or watchdogs and see if anything triggers it but hopefully im good now. Thxs again :-)

There are often two options in the BIOS, Load Optimized Settings and Restore Factory Defaults (sometimes listed as Most Stable Settings) you should never select the optimized settings option as it effectively overclocks the computer which will lead to system instability, your Ram and CPU can be overclocked but you are best doing it yourself as you will be able to control it better.

 

I would suggest that you leave the settings as they are for now though and see if things remain stable, you should also create a new restore point in Windows.
