backing up hard drive to portable hard drive

My laptop screen won't light up. Can I take out the hard drive and back it up to a portable hard drive?

Yes you can but before you do have you tried connecting the notebook to an external screen as you may be able to back up the data without removing the drive if it is a screen issue.

What happened with the screen, is it broken or has it just gone black, if the latter post the brand and model name or number of the notebook for us.
