I have a legal xp pro disk that I want to backup for protection. Nero will not copy it.

There is no copy protection on an XP install disk so, provided the version of Nero you are using has the ability to do an image copy, there should be no reason why it can't be copied.  The reason why there's no copy protection is because of the Product Key, regardless of how many copies of the install disk exist, the Product Key can only be used on one computer.

 

I personally use a program called ImgBurn to copy disks and create ISOs.  Rather than make a backup to another disk, I create an ISO image that can be used later to burn a new install disk if needed.  The ISO is a file that can be stored more easily (IMO) then a physical disk.

You would be better to create an image of the present installation that is on your HDD, since support ended for XP earlier this year people are reporting that not all previous updates are still available, this can only make XP more prone to malware attack when used online, you can use Macrium Reflect (free) to create an image of the present XP that is installed, this way you will retain all of your drivers and security updates etc, details here please disregard any other product or service that may be offered at the link.
