This computer is my gf's old pc. I tried booting up for the first time and it came up with a blue screen error. I read through it and says to reboot if this is the first time viEwing the error. Tried rebooting and still the same thing. The error it says is
*** STOP: 0x0000001E (0xC0000005, 0x81C9CC21, 0x00000001, 0x00000098) KMODE_EXCEPTION_NOT_HANDLED

I can't seem to enter it into safe mode either. We borrowed an XP pro disk from a family member and it still won't run off the CD, it spits the CD out and tries to boot up anyway. The pc is already set to read the CD drive first and still the same outcome. Is there any way to enter the command prompt without the computer booting to be able to run the CD through there?

Ok, I'm out of town. But how am I supposed to run a hot fix if I can't get passed the blue screen. Here's another Q by the way. I want to upgrade the machine anyways, why can't I get it to read the installation disk. How can I just install the disk and just do away with the old system and not worry about the blue screen?

You will need to find a way to get it to boot from something, (floppy, CD/DVD, etc.), before you can go any further.

 

Reset the BIOS to factory defaults, set it to try and boof from CD/DVD first, save your changes and then see if it will boot from a Windows installation CD/DVD. If not you may have a bad/dirty/scratched CD/DVD and/or there is a problem with the optical drive, such as disconnected, broken, or corroded cables, dirty lenses or it may simply be worn out (useles/dead).

First, try booting the XP CD on another computer to make sure it's good and is bootable.

 

If it works then you need to replace the CD drive if it won't read the CD.
