Let me re-ask...the problem is still exactly as originally described or has there been a change?

It is still the same with multiple versions of Chrome.exe*32 running in the task manager. There are also a number of other applications with exe*32 on the end - e.g. nav.exe*32 etc.

I've consulted with others here and the consensus is that the *32's belong to various components of Norton. That said, I have a new tool that I'd like you to run. However, this is a Beta Tool and as such *might* cause issues on your computer. I am taking the precaution of having you Backup your Registry and Set a Restore point first. However, if you still chose not to run the tool, I will respect your decision. I can tell you that we've run it here several dozed times with no adverse effects. Still, it is Beta.
Backing Up Your Registry:
- Download ERUNT from Here. (ERUNT (Emergency Recovery Utility NT) is a free program that allows you to keep a complete backup of your registry and restore it when needed.)
- Install ERUNT by following the prompts. (use the default install settings but say no when asked to add ERUNT to the start-up folder. This can be enabled later)
- Start ERUNTeither by double clicking on the desktop icon or choosing to start the program at the end of the setup.
- Choose a location for the backup, (or use the default location which is C:\WINDOWS\ERDNT).
- Make sure that at least the first two check boxes are ticked.
- Press OK
- Press YES to create the folder.
Rerun Zoek
Temporary disable your AntiVirus and AntiSpyware protection - instructions here.
- Right-click on icon and select Run as Administrator to start the tool.
- Wait patiently until the main console will appear, it may take a minute or two.
- In the main box please paste in the following script:
createsrpoint;
- Make sure that Scan All Users option is checked.
- Push Run Script and wait patiently. The scan may take a couple of minutes.
- When the scan completes, a zoek-results logfile should open in notepad.
- If a reboot is needed, it will be opened after it. You may also find it at your main drive (usually C:\ drive)
Finally, (this is the Beta Product)
- Please download Malwarebytes Anti-Rootkit BETA to your desktop.
- If you are using Internet Explorer and receive a prompt that the security settings block the download, follow the instructions to reset Internet Explorer posted below first.
- Double-click mbar-version-number.exe and follow the prompts to install the program.
- Use the "Update" button to get the latest definitions.
- Before you run the Malwarebytes Anti-Rootkit BETA scan you may be prompted to exit Malwarebytes Anti-Malware.
Please do so using the icon in your taskbar and click "Previous" to go back to the "Scan" option. - Wait for the scan to finish and use the "Cleanup" button if Malwarebytes Anti-Rootkit BETA found the malware.
Then post the resulting logs and let me know how things are working.

Have you had a chance to run these tools?

Hi - sorry for the delay in responding.
I ran the above as you described and Malwarebytes did not detect any issues that needed resolving.
Perhaps the exe*32 programs are not malware - I have stopped using this computer while trying to resolve the issue - I will go back to normal usage and start a new thread if there is no improvement in the computer's performance.
Thanks for all your help to date. I appreciate your time.
Cheers,
Catherine

Yes, please stop back if things are not improved. I would be happy to try further or perhaps another Helper would be more successful.

- Right-click on icon and select Run as Administrator to start the tool.
- Ensure that Remove disinfection tools, Purge system restore and Reset system settings are checked.
- Push Run.
- When finished, it will display a notepad report.
