Dear Helper,

Firstly, Thank you for taking the time to read this and probably help me.

One of the systems on my small home network is badly infected. From what I gather someone opened their mail on it and post that it blue screened.

I have read a few of the other posts on similar problems and tried to resolve the issue but nothing seems to work.

When I restart my computer I get the following

a) Explorer is unable to start because of a fatal error ....... (two times... click ok both times)

b) BLUE screen saying my system is infected by the trojan-spy.html.smitfraud.c and that it can't continue and I should run an antivirus or ad ware removal tool. When I try and run ad aware se or Norton Antivirus (via the tasks... run task action) It says unable to start program.

These are not verbatim statements if you like I can sit and copy them manually.

I have tried to run smitfraud.reg and merge it into my registry to rectify and that didn't help.

I tried to run FixO but that didn't help.

I have also tried a few other sites but nothing seems to work.

I finally downloaded hijack this and and burnt a cd and ran it on the infected computer (again through tasks ... run task)

My log is very very crazy and I am begging someone to please help me figure out what to delete and how to salvage my system.

Many thanks in advance please find the Hijack This Log Below

Hi Nikhil and welcome
I understand you may have to save these programs to a floppy or burn them to a CD to carry them over to the infected computer
  • Download CWShredder (there is a link in my signature), unzip it, and save it on the Desktop. Please do not run it yet, though.
  • Update CWShredder by click on the update button,Next be sure and click on the "fix" button.Close out the program when done

  • Please set your system to show
all files; please see here if you're unsure how to do this.

  • Close all programs leaving only HijackThis running. Place a check mark next to the following, making sure you get them all and not any others by mistake:

Dear Don77,

Once again Firstly Thank you so much for taking the time to try to help me.

I have followed your steps as mentioned and Include the observations as they occured.

Download CWShredder (there is a link in my signature), unzip it, and save it on the Desktop. Please do not run it yet, though.

[COLOR=red]Done

Update CWShredder by click on the update button,Next be sure and click on the "fix" button.Close out the program when done

[COLOR=red]Done but since the infected computer is not able to go online as yet, I ran update on this computer and it said the version that I have is up to date and therefore I burnt it to CD and took it to the infected comp and ran it. got an error message that read, " The application failed to initialize properly (0xc0000005) Click on Ok to terminate the application. So I clicked ok

Please set your system to show
all files; please see here if you're unsure how to do this.

[COLOR=red]Tried my best to get to My computer. Unfortunately since all I have is a blue screen and no start button or buttons on my desktop, my only interface to the files on the computer are to press CTRL ALT DEL and then tasks.. run tasks... so did that and there was no option anywhere to show folder options. (I did try but if you know some trick around this please do tell me and I shall retry.)

Close all programs leaving only HijackThis running. Place a check mark next to the following, making sure you get them all and not any others by mistake:

[COLOR=red] Since there were no applications in my task bar, I continued directly to run Hijack this and Deleted all the files mentioned below

Click on Fix Checked when finished and exit HijackThis.

[COLOR=red] Done, I first got an error log, couldn't catch all the details but there was an error that suggested I send my log to someone. Before I could catch it all it went back to the fix screen and this time it deleted all the files (I think) that i had put a tick mark next to.

Reboot into Safe Mode: please see here if you are not sure how to do this.

[COLOR=red] Done
Using Windows Explorer, locate the following files/folders, and delete them:

C:\WINDOWS\system32\u7ftwwsv9kthd.exe
C:\WINDOWS\system32\paytime.exe
Exit Explorer, and reboot as normal afterwards.

[COLOR=red]Done

Download the updated smitfraud reg please
http://metallica.gee...m/smitfraud.reg

Save it to your desk top and merge it please

[COLOR=red]Done

Download The Hoster Press "Restore Original Hosts" and press "OK". Exit Program.

Download the DelDomains zip file and unzip it to your desktop.

DelDomains

Right-click on the deldomains.inf file and select 'Install'

Reboot your computer, Post back a fresh HijackThis log and we will take another look.

[COLOR=red] Done, still get the blue welcome screen with an explorer.exe error.
which reads, "The application failed to initialize properly (0xc0000005) Click on Ok to terminate the application"
I click on OK. Press CTRL ALT DEL and the task manager pops up with no tasks, but there is one difference, now there is no message stating that I have a spyware and need to run anti virus or adware program etc etc.

Dear Don77,

Thank you for helping me.

I hope that you noticed all the remarks that I had marked as which for some reason came up in black only.

I did the following as instructed

Lets see if we can get you back in working order,
Just in case do you have your XP CD available ?

I don't have the CD handy but I do have the installation as a folder on my computers

Please donwload the following
http://www.kellys-ko...s/nodesktop.reg

DONE

Unfortunately still the same explorer error. When i see the processes there is NO explorer, and there are no tasks in the tasks tab either.

When it ask you to merge click yes.
Reboot and let us know how you make out,

[color=red]I have rebooted but to no avail unfortunately. Please find below the latest hijack this log

Dear Don77

I tried one more thing and got a strange response. Thought I should let you know.

I replaced the shdocvw.dll file with one downloaded from dll-files.com or some such place

The explorer error vanishes, but the blue screen stays. When I run explorer.exe i see my start button for a micro second and then it vanishes again but no error.

I replaced the shdocvw.dll back with my old one and we are back to the error.

I don't know if that helps any. Just something I was trying

Now i must sleep it is 3 am here .. Ill be back in about 7 hours or so ?

Thanks

Hi again Nikhil.

If you are not receiving the error anymore could you run Smitfraud reg again please,

If not
Lets see if this will help us out,

Download and Save Cleandesktop to your computer from this link: http://www.thespykil...leandesktop.exe and double click on the cleandesktop.exe

It will automatically extract to c:\desktopclean where it needs to be to run and will automatically run the cleandesktop.vbs script

If it doesn't open then go to c:\desktopclean and double click on the cleandesktop.vbs Do not run any other file from there please unless asked to

If you have script blocking enabled you will get a warning about a malicious script wanting to run. Please allow this script to run. It is not malicious.

If you get a message when you first run it "Can not find script file "blah blah blah" then don't worry just doubleclick the cleandesktop.vbs script again you sometimes get that message when a script blocker blocks the script

It will then kill Explorer. You will lose your taskbar and desktop. It will repair the registry entries returning your normal desktop and context menu functions.

It will restart Explorer.

Once you have performed the big cleanup, each of the other Users on the System needs to be signed in to clean up their desktop and regain the right click.

Dear Don 77,

Firstly my apologies on the delay in replying.

I did the following as suggested

If you are not receiving the error anymore could you run Smitfraud reg again please,

Ran Smitfraud and merged the registry entries in both circumstances of the old and new shdocvw.dll file it made no difference

If not
Lets see if this will help us out,

Download and Save Cleandesktop to your computer from this link: http://www.thespykil...leandesktop.exe and double click on the cleandesktop.exe

It will restart Explorer.

Done as above again in both variants of the shdocvw.dll but it made no difference. I also managed to download and run adaware 6 but it came out largely clean. a few tracking cookies that I deleted, thats about all.

I can run most programs except for norton antivirus and explorer and ad aware SE

Once you have performed the big cleanup, each of the other Users on the System needs to be signed in to clean up their desktop and regain the right click.

Well I still don't have explorer running and there are no tasks in the task pane. Just the processes.

I do hope we can salvage this.

Thank you again for your kind assistance

With Warm Regards

No worry about the delay in responding We have a time difference,

Do you have control of your desk top ?

When you say you can't run explorer are you referring to Internet explorer ?

http://www.geekstogo...n=download&id=7

Run the above and see if you can get back inline with the computer

Dear Don77,

No I don't mean internet explorer. Though that doesn't work either. I mean explorer.exe

I still have the blue screen No desktop Icons, No Start Button and No Tasks ... Though when I go through task manager I can run almost all softwares on the computer except for Internet Explorer, Ad Aware SE, Norton Antivirus and Recover.

Let me run the winsocks thingy and get back

Thanks again

Dear Don and Knight,

After so much hard work, I was getting a wee bit traumatised. I decided to give it one more shot.

I took my XP disk and did a repair install and IT WORKED !!! I now have my desktop and my start button back and can run almost everything. There is still a sluggishness to the start up and a few programs are being erratic and crashing etc. but all and all the system is up and running.

I updated norton and ad aware and scanned the system.. cleaned out all the junk...

Anything else that you suggest that I do ?

Regards and many many thanks for all you help

I had asked earlier if you had the disk, Either way you got it back in working order !!

There is still a sluggishness to the start up and a few programs are being erratic and crashing etc. but all and all the system is up and running.

Some of the files for other programs may have been corupted. Depneding on what they are if you have the software you may want to reinstall them,

Could we get a look at a fresh HJT log please.

Again nice job getting back to working order !!

Dear Don,

You are quite right, on the XP disk. Fortunately, I managed to find it. Also since I had never done a repair before I was a little scared about the whole concept.

As to the sluggishness, its primarily at startup, so liveable for now.

There were a few other issues like networking and a couple of programs crashing but that I have sorted out.

Please find the HJT Log below for your perusal and once again I can not express the amount of gratitude that I feel for the help and support that you gave.

With Warm Regards and Many Thanks
