Nail & Aurora problem (resolved)

Hi i'am having problem with aurora pop-ups. I tried to remove it from Add/Remove programs but it gives a message: could not find C:\Windows\abiuninst.html
coz i think i've already deleted this file manually while trying to fix my PC.
I also have a "Search assistant" written in Add/Remove Programs but when i click on it nothing happens. :tazz:

We can definitely help you, but first you need to help us. The first step in this process is to apply Service Pack 1a for Windows XP, or Service Pack 4 if you are running Win2k. Without this update, you're wide open to re-infection, and we're both just wasting our time.

Apply the update, reboot, and post a fresh Hijack This log.

I tried what to advised me but when I try to run Validation assiatant the following message appears (I was working on IE):

The Windows Validation Assistant failed to run properly.
Please verify that you are running a supported operating system, and your internet explorer security settings allow signed ActiveX contols to run.

How do I enable ActiveX Control in Internet Explorer?

From the browser menu, click Tools > Internet Options
Click on the Security tab
Select the globe icon representing the Internet Zone
Click Custom Level
Scroll down to the ActiveX controls and plug-ins section
Under Download signed ActiveX contols select Prompt
Under Run ActiveX controls and plug-ins select Enable
Under Script ActiveX controls marked safe for scripting select Enable
Click OK to close the Security Settings window (If prompted to verify that you want to change the security settings for this zone click Yes)
Click OK to close the Internet Options window

Retry the proceedure to validate windows.

Thanx again for your time and support.
I tried what you have advised but it didn't work. The way things were going I felt that my computer is really messed-up so i've formated it and now everything looks ok.
When all the spyware's etc. came I was using fully upgraded Norton Anti-virus 2004 and Norton Internet security 2004. But inspite of these security measures the addware attacks were common on my pc and I was never using any P2P software. So now what should i use. Should I stick with norton antivirus and add some more programs to protect my pc. Should I install windows service pack 2 and use windows own firewall (is it effecient enough).
Please advise ;) .

Hi Ifti,

Yes i would go ahead and see if you can upgrade to SP2, if you can let me know and i can advise you re programs to prevent malware etc.

If you are unable to upgrade and have a genuine XP key then we can get the techs on the XP forum to see what they can advise, they are the experts in that field, i specialise in malware.

Hi
yes i've installed SP2 and it is woking. I also checked the windows validation and it says that windows product key is valid.
Now i have windows own firewall (does it work fine or should i chenge it with sygate etc), the Windows security center also says:

Virus protuction check status
Norton anti-virus reports that it is installed, but its tsatus is unknown.

But i've fully updated Norton anti-virus 2004 and Norton internet security 2004, which i've already told you didn't give me any protection from malware attacks....so should i get rid of them and have something new....or do i keep them and add some more support to them.

Please let me know

Hi Ifti,

Well everythung looks good afterall, however if you have data backed up to reinstall on your PC, ensure you run it through antivirus first.

As promised here is my prebvention material.

From your log, I see nothing in the ways of trojans, nor any evil entities attempting to possess your computer, except for Windows but it's too late for that one. :tazz:

Congratulations your log now appears to be clean. ;)

Here are some tips, to reduce the potential for spyware infection in the future, I strongly recommend installing the following applications:

Detect and Remove Programs:
  • How to use Ad-Aware to remove Spyware <= If you suspect that you have spyware installed on your computer, here are instructions on how to download, install and then use Ad-Aware.
  • How to use Spybot to remove Spyware <= If you suspect that you have spyware installed on your computer, here are instructions on how to download, install and then use Spybot. Similar to Ad-Aware, I strongly recommend both to catch most spyware.
Prevention Programs:
  • Spywareblaster <= SpywareBlaster will prevent spyware from being installed.
  • Spywareguard <= SpywareGuard offers realtime protection from spyware installation attempts.
  • IE/Spyad <= IE/Spyad places over 4000 websites and domains in the IE Restricted list which will severely impair attempts to infect your system. It basically prevents any downloads (Cookies etc) from the sites listed, although you will still be able to connect to the sites.
  • MVPS Hosts file <= The MVPS Hosts file replaces your current HOSTS file with one containing well know ad sites etc. Basically, this prevents your coputer from connecting to those sites by redirecting them to 127.0.0.1 which is your local computer
  • Google Toolbar <= Get the free google toolbar to help stop pop up windows.
Other necessary Programs:
  • AntiVirus Program<= An AntiVirus program is a must! Whether it is a free version like AVG or Anti-Vir, or a shareware version like Norton or Kapersky, this is a must have.
  • Firewall<= A firewall is definatley a must have. Two good free versions are Sygate and ZoneLabs.
  • More Secure Browser<= Internet Explorer is not the most secure and best browser. There are safer and better alternatives available. I recommend Firefox, however Opera and SlimBrowsers are good as well.

one more thingmy firewall is constantly asking if i wanna allow these applications to go on the net:
