Hello folks,

Before doing a fresh install try the following as a last role of the dice  :(

Run chkdsk and System File Checker (SFC) from the Recovery Console

  • Boot your Vista installation DVD
  • When you see "Press any key to boot from CD or DVD", press Enter
  • At the "Install Windows" screen, click on Repair your computer at lower left
  • At the System Recovery Options screen, make note of the drive letter assigned to your boot drive (normally C:) and click Next
  • At the Chose a Recovery Tool window, click on Command Prompt. You will be sitting at X:\Sources directory
  • Run chkdsk or SFC
    • If you did not note the drive letter of your boot disk, you can enter bcdedit and look at the osdevice line to see what it is.
    • For chkdsk, type chkdsk c: /r and press Enter (use the letter from above if not C:).
    • For sfc, type sfc /scannow /offbootdir=c:\ /offwindir=c:\windows and press Enter (use the letter from above)

Let either run to completion undisturbed.

Good call on the USB ISO and thanks for the update Luis

Let us know when everything is installed and updated and how things are then.

Please remember the following: to also install the HP drivers once Windows is fully updated, create a new restore point before installing the HP drivers and install an AV such as Avast (scroll to the bottom of the page, bottom left for the free version) or MSE.

Hello Luis,

Thanks for the update which hopefully is a sign that both issues are resolved.

We don`t close tech topics so no worries there and no need for any donation as we are happy to help if we can, all that we ask for in return is that people conclude their threads by posting any outcome be it good or bad

Hi Luis, is the WIFI still working OK?

Myself and Phill do actually think the sound problem is hardware faulty rather than software, so a reinstall of Windows is not likely to cure it.

What might work well would be to obtain a sound card that will fit the Express card slot, your machine has the 54 sized slot. I found that Creative sound blaster make them and can be found on E Bay at various prices.

One of those should bypass the motherboard sound chip that is maybe the fault.

Ditto to what colleague Nev has advised, Creative Labs make very good audio devices but some others do not

No, I think that is only a motherboard repair spare part .

Here is a review and picture of the type of card you need, in the fact it fits in the slot, possibly covered with a blanking plate at the moment.

http://www.theregist...o_creative_xfi/

That in the review is a lot expensive though, so you need to be looking for a size  54 Express laptop sound card. Some here on E Bay.

http://www.ebay.co.u...op-express-card.

Be aware there are two sizes, a 32 mm and 54mm, you require the 54mm size to fit the expansion slot on your laptop.

alternatively there are also USB sound cards similar to these reviewed here

For finding where the expansion slot cover is located, scroll down the pages in this service manual for the pictures and descriptions.

Hi, yes in both cases the sound does come out of the sound card, though not sure if the internal speakers are still in the equation.

I did use an earlier type of card on an older Toshiba, but only to improve the sound quality to earphones, the original sound in my case was still working, unlike yours.

The only real difference is that the 54mm card is a true expansion card, whereas the USB cards are just that and mainly made for systems where there is no expansion slot.

If you definitely need the laptop speakers to be working, and as we are reasonably sure the problem is faulty hardware, the only full cure is a new motherboard, which is quite expensive.
