Windows Media Player need you to install a DVD player (like VLC ect.) to be able to play dvd (I know strange but that is how it works. So if your reinstall did not include a program to play dvd it is sure that WMP will not play them.

Hope that helps

Thank you I did notice the VLC icon missing from the bottom of my screen. I installed that but it still wont play a dvd.Now wmp says it cant play because there is not a compatible dvd decoder installed.

Try installing KMPlayer it includes a dvd decoder and if for some reasom WMP still does play dvd's then you can use the KMPlayer as your default dvd player (I prefer it over WMP) and any other format of encoded video it plays good and has a lot of useful options and tweaking that can be done.
