Does your employer give you and other employees company cell phones with GPS tracking to monitor your location at all times during work hours? My boss does. Most of the time, I am doing the outside jobs. Yesterday, I finished my job ahead of schedule and then went to my friend's company for personal things. This morning, I was given a warning that I was goofing around during work.

A HR colleague told me that the boss can not only monitor our location, he a server that collects information on our cell phones, like text messages, phone calls as well as Internet use. What a terrible thing! How could it is possible? Has my boss gone too far if that is true?

If its a company provided cell phone, they can do whatever they want with it. This also applies to any other device they supply like a pc or a vehicle. The device belongs to them and a case could be made that they are protecting themselves by monitoring the usage of the device. They have a right to track your movements when you are being paid to make sure that you are working as you found out.

 

You can always leave that phone at work at the end of the day and pick it up in the morning. You may also not want to take that phone with you when you aren't working so they can't track you then. What you do on your own time is none of their business.
