I was asked by two members of our church if I could look at their laptop and see why it's asking for a username and password and they don't know why.

They said they did a re-install and now it's asking for something they didn't have on it before.

I have tried to get into it to change the password to something they could write down and use from now on.

I didn't ask, but I believe they bought this from someone else ...

it is running windows 7

can anyone help me?

They said they did a re-install

We really need to know exactly how they performed the reinstall?

1 Did they completely clear the hard drive including Windows itself, by formatting and then installing a fresh copy of Windows with a fresh install of all their applications (Word Excel etc?)and then copy back their data files from their back up system?

or
2 did they perform a repair install?

or
3 Did they reinstall from an image made by the previous owner of the computer or themselves using a Windows system image?

or
4 did they perform a "restore to factory" using the hidden partition on their hard drive or restore discs that came with the computer when it was new?

Let us know these answers and the make and model number of the computer and one of us will advise the next steps.

Regards

according to them, they had a black screen that said something was missing and they would need to do a 'recovery' so they used their recovery disc to do this. I am currently not at home with their laptop, so any other information required will have to wait until tomorrow ... thanks for stepping in
