I tried your suggestion under tools to check for disk errors and got a message that I can't check for errors because the disk is being used.... so I clicked on check for errors on next restart. Rebooted the laptop and waiting to see what happens next.... will keep you posted.

I'm still concerned about the hard drive activity light always being on tho..... usually it only flickers as the hard drive is being read or there's some kind of activity. :upset:

That is how check disk works on next boot.

The HDD activity LED being permanently lit suggests that it is continuously scanning the surface of the platter/s or it is stuck.

Somehow the check disk for errors option wasn't offered when I restarted the laptop... in any case, I chose the option to run a "Recovery of Factory Default Software"... it's part of the Toshiba Recovery Wizard. It's in the process now. I backed up all the data I needed so I'm OK with a "recovery" at this point. Seemed like nothing else was working.

You may be lucky with this but keep in mind that the Recovery Partition is at the beginning of the disk, seldom used and any bad sectors on the drive could cause the drive to fall over, it may not be instant or even happen for months etc but there is always the danger, that is the benefit of having a SMART capable HDD, it warns you.

So far so good... I restored back to the factory software and it seems to have fixed the freezing problem, Only one thing... it seems I can't install Google Chrome... I'm getting an "Installation failed. Error code: 0x8004071b" error message... any ideas?

Everything else is working just fine (so far). Quick, no freezing, no connections problems. Google Chrome installation seems to be the one issue I'm having right now.

[UPDATE] Somehow I was able to finally install Chrome... so please disregard my previous comment regarding Google Chrome.

Thanks for the update musikman and glad to hear that all seems well

As a precaution once everything is updated I would recommend that you create a back up image of your HDD, you can use Macrium Reflect (free) for this, details here
