My video card is running hot (even when I first turn on my computer) and my fan keeps running. After lots of research it seems that I may need to replace my video card. However, I've just spent the last four hours trying to figure out how to buy a replacement video card for my Gateway MS2252 gaming laptop....but can't seem to find one. 

It has a NVIDIA GeForce 9800M GTS - 1 GB GDDR3 SDRAM . 

Can you please tell me where to buy a comparable or better than video card that will fit in my laptop? 

I am deeply grateful for your help!

Hello,

First an foremost I am "not" a technician, I'm sure one will reply though. As far as I know that part is not replaceable it's soldered directly to the motherboard. Unless you know differently.

Thanks, Zep516 for taking the time to reply to my post.  And thanks for sending the link on how to disassemble the laptop. I had actually watched this video about 2 hours ago.  I also opened my laptop to make sure there wasn't any dust clogging it up and making my fan run constantly.  I kept reading that this laptop was fully up-gradable...but not sure that is true.  And if the video card is indeed soldered to the mother board...well...not sure what to do at that point.  I love my laptop and don't want to have to replace it.  I did download some software that gave me the temperature's for the different components in my laptop...and discovered that the video card is running hot.  Even right after I turn on the computer and have virtually no programs running.  Anywho...I imagine that's more information that you want to read.  I guess I just need to vent a little after my hours of work and research.  Thanks again for your post:)

You're welcome. The techs here may be aware of a common issue with that Laptop and maybe able to assist you better. There seems to be a heat sink for the gpu (Video Card) could that be an issue? I don't know for sure what steps to take to figure that out..... the techs here maybe able to though.

There is a heat sink.  It looked clean...BUT maybe it's, for some reason, no longer making contact correctly...although at first glance it looked solid and in place.  I think I'll open it up again and check a little closer.

Hope this helps:)  I have since learned that I cannot replace the video card.  So am now trying to figure out why it's running so hot...or at least why the fan thinks it's running so hot and stays on.  Thanks for your help!

Yeah, usually laptop graphics do not have the ability to be upgraded. Although replacement with the same make/model of video card is sometimes possible.

It seems to me that since this is an older laptop that it is likely that you need to clean your fan and heatsink of dust/debris. It's also very likely that the thermal paste on the GPU has dried out and needs to be cleaned and reapplied.

I was having similar issues recently. My laptop would actually shut itself down due to overheating while streaming video, even when using a cooling pad. After applying new thermal paste and cleaning the heatsink my laptop hasn't had any issues! Just FYI, I thought that the the heatsink looked pretty clean as well, at least from the outside, but once I removed the fan from it you could see how clogged it was with dust.

Hi, like hazard209, I am also not a full registered tech here on G2G, although I am one on a couple of other forums, however we both know at least a good bit.

 

two oddities I can see in your Speccy report, firstly it appears very minimal, there is usually a lot more detail, the version you are running is an older version than the current version, number v1.26.698 or it may be an even higher number now, so can you please download and install a fresh version. (The number is my own present version)

 

The second one is that the date shown for when it was run is over three years ago, so we need to know that the time and date on the bottom right of the screen, is that showing correct time or is that wrong?

 

If the rest of the report is accurate, for what little there is there, the temperatures shown for the CPU, and GPU are well within tolerance at the time that the Speccy report was run, though if anything the CPU was a little high in comparison to the graphics temperature. Had the computer been running for any length of time before making that report?

If I may chime in folks 

 

That is not the correct Speccy report, apart from the time and date details being wrong so are the OS and hardware specs
