I updated to Windows 8 last week, unfortunately to find that DVD is not playing any more.   I am looking for a Blu-ray player, at the same time it should be a DVD player. Is that possible?

yes a blu-ray player will play both formats.  However, you need software to enable playback for blu-ray.  PowerDVD by cyberlink (live, pro, and ultra versions) comes recommended, but I also belive VLC will play blu-ray, but since i don't have a player in my pc I can not verify

Not knowing where you are from it is hard to suggest a player but here are some examples of BR players you could consider.

It does of course depend on the physical disk drive itself being able to play blue ray in the first place!

Did it actually do so before upgrading to Windows 8?

I have used VLC, but it can't play commercial Blu ray discs. So I turned my feet to Macgo Windows Blu ray player. It worked well and don't cost so much. Anyway you can make it a referrence. http://www.macbluray...uray-player.htm
