Hi guys,

I have recently attempted my third build - all others have gone fine in the past, but i'm having serious issues with the latest; When i turn it on, the fans go whizz, the motherboard lights up, but there is no beep and nothing appears on the screen. Initially i thought there was something wrong with the motherboard, but I took it back to the shop and replaced it, and the exact same problem occured.

I am using;

ASUS Z97-Pro motherboard

Intel i3-4150 processor

GEiL Fury Hyper 4GB (1x4GB) Red

Radeon 3DDR 2GB graphics card

650 watt power supply

All parts are new.

HDD's and DVD are old, but it good working condition.

Can anyone give a suggestion of what I can try, or what could have gone wrong?

:welcome:  micksamo.

I am sure we can sort out the issue but please give a litttle more info which will better help us help you.

What exactly is the brand/model of the GPU?  In which slot is it installed?

What brand/model is the PSU?

In which slot is the RAM installed?

Are you using the stock CPU cooler?

Are you sure the MB came with a Beeper or did you install a mini system speaker?

Did you install the I/O shield that came in the MB box?

Did you check the standoffs on the case mounting plate, must match exactly the screw holes in the MB?  No extra ones that could cause a short.

Thanks for the prompt replay, it is much appreciated.

Ok, let me try to answer all you've asked;

What exactly is the brand/model of the GPU?  In which slot is it installed?

GPU is a Radeon HD 6570 2GB DDR3 and it is installed in the slot marked in the manual as PCle 3.0/2.0 x16_1 slot (the recommended one for a single VGA card)

What brand/model is the PSU?

PSU is a XFX TS650

In which slot is the RAM installed?

RAM is in the DIMM_A2 slot, as prescribed in the manual

Are you using the stock CPU cooler?

Correct. The standard one that came with the CPU.

Are you sure the MB came with a Beeper or did you install a mini system speaker?

Motherboard did not come with a speaker, when it did not beep, i put one in, in accordance with the manual.

Did you install the I/O shield that came in the MB box?

I/O shield installed neatly.

Did you check the standoffs on the case mounting plate, must match exactly the screw holes in the MB?  No extra ones that could cause a short.

Double checked now; 6 stand-offs with 6 matching holes & 6 screws.

Thanks for the info :spoton:

Instruction may be a bit pedantic  for you, having some building experience, but are given so a beginner reading can follow along.

A bare bones setup will be best for troubleshooting.

Always turn off the PSU when working on the computer and take anti static measures by briefly touching a bare metal part of the case, do this even when handling parts.

As you hear no beeps, check the speaker on another computer or use a know working one.

Turn off the PSU.

Disconnect all wiring to the MB.

Remove the GPU and RAM.

Grip the CPU cooler and, very gently, rock it corner to corner.   It should be firmly in place with no obvious movement.

Remove the MB from the case, turn it over and inspect the four locking pins from the cooler.  MB manual, chapter 2 page 4. (2-4)

Place the MB on the MB box close to the open side of the case.

Check that the CPU fan plug is plugged into the CPU-fan, not CPU _opt.

Reinstall the RAM.

Connect two power cable, 24 pin and 8 pin. (1-4) #1.

Install the system speaker.

Connect a keyboard/mouse, using PS/2 or USB 2.0, not USB 3.0.

Check the ez-xmp, epu, tpu switches are in the disable position, (default)

Switch on the PSU and press the power button MB, (1-4) #21.

Fans should start and POST begin.

Keyboard lights flash.  other MB lights flash, Post ends with a beep code??

What other LEDS lit on the MB?

What Q-code displayed? (1-4) #25.

Press the power button, turn off the PSU.

If the above is a fail, try again without the RAM installed, if OK, try again with the RAM in a different slot.

If a total fail.   Remove the cooler, remove the CPU, inspect for damage and/or bent pins.

One item I missed. the product code for the RAM, or a link to the store please.

just to add to iammykyl's expert advice,

before removing the cpu and cooler, personally i'd first remove everything connected to the motherboard, hdd's, dvd, fans (except cpu cooler fan), gpu (use onboard.) and try powering on with just the single ram stick and see if it will now post or beep, if it does then add things back 1 at a time until you find the problem component.

if it doesn't then it does start looking more like a cpu problem, providing the psu has been tested to be working ok.

INSTRUCTIONS FOLLOWED TO THE LETTER. Results:

Fans should start and POST begin.

CPU Fan is running fine

Keyboard lights flash.  other MB lights flash, Post ends with a beep code??

Keyboard lights do not flash. Mouse optics on only. No motherboard lights "flashing". No beep.

What other LEDS lit on the MB?

CPU_LED & XLED1

What Q-code displayed? (1-4) #25.

00

If the above is a fail, try again without the RAM installed, if OK, try again with the RAM in a different slot.

RAM removed. No change in the situation. Exact same result.

If a total fail.   Remove the cooler, remove the CPU, inspect for damage and/or bent pins.

Inspection reveals absolutely nothing even slightly abnormal.

One item I missed. the product code for the RAM, or a link to the store please.

HX316C10FR/4 (is this the one you need?)

I've tried working backwards, but as I can't get any sort of response, with even the bare basics, I can only assume it's a CPU problem.

I don't think it's a PSU problem, as initially I thought I simply wasn't giving it enough power with my original 550watt PSU (even though it should have been sufficiient), so I replaced it with a 650watt unit. Unless both (brand new) units were faulty, it shouldn't * be the PSU.

Basically the same goes for the motherboard, which was also replaced in a similar manner, but the exact same issue exists.

Does that sound like a CPU problem to you?

Thanks for your help, it is much appreciated. I'm living i a foreign country where I don't speak the local language, so heading to the nearest computer technician is far more hassle than it's worth and unlikely to result in a suitable solution.

*I'm not going to 100% rule out anything at this point

the 00 code is no cpu detected so yes that could well be your problem, and what i'd change next seeing how you've already changed both the psu and motherboard already, which are the 2 main items i'd first think about testing/changing when there were no beeb codes in the first place.

Thanks for your input terry1996  .

I come to the same conclusion that the CPU is faulty and should be a RMA.  The lit CPU LED, faulty CPU, and the 00 Q-code, (not used) shows the POST has stopped without detecting the actual error.   The xLED1 lit, indicates the XMP switch is enabled.   This not a bigger but, with only one stick installed and it fails, no computer.

Please inspect the TIM pad on the cooler, if it shows any sign of melting, I would advice totally removing it, using 99% pure Isopropyl alcohol.   Apply your own TIM at reassemble.

Let us know how it goes

Cheers guys, I probably won't have a chance to look at it again properly until the New Year, but i'll let you know how it goes - and most probably come back to you if it's still got problems.
