I was not able to download some items as the message was that there was no flash player.  Flash player was installed.  I thought that was Adobe's way of making you upgrade but did that anyway to 15.  Still although Flash player shows as an added program, websites don't see it.  How do I fix this?   Is there a "direct" download for Adobe Flash or a comparative software?

Which browsers are saying this ? Where do you see it installed, in control panel ? Check browsers plug in page, see it there too ? What type of web pages giving you this warning ? Plug in might not be in browsers.

by simplely installing the flash player will not serve the browsers functions. you need to check weather it is installed in the browsers add-ons too. try to check the add-ons tab then try to fix if any issues are their with the add-ons.
