For the last few days, I've researched multiple forums, ran the latest and updated Spy Sweeper, Ad-aware SE, Spybot S&D, and HijackThis. I've deleted processes and files. I removed MUCH data and unused programs from the hard drive (to speed scanning). I've read the Q & A's, followed and completed the 'presubmission' instructions for over 3 forums, and still have this little bugger.

Each forum expert uses different software to fix various parts of this multilevel problem. So, I guess I need to post a topic and try and get a single 'tailored' solution to my specific situation or risk really messing it up.

I keep a close eye on my open processes (Yea, TaskManager!). Granted, I recently installed Microsoft Office and failed to note the changes in the number of processes, so a couple of these 'newer' processes may be legitimate. But, I suspect the rest may be problematic: msole32.exe, shnlog.exe, ctfmon.exe, intmon.exe.

My symptoms are about the same as other postings except, I've managed to get rid of the displaying of the HTML (warning), the icons in the system tray, and the Windows popups. However, all of the Internet Explorer issues still exist. It's hijacked so high that its nose bleeds.

I bow to the masters for advice. Thank you. Here is my HijackThis log:

1. Make sure your PC is set to show all hidden files and folders go here for instructions on how to do this. http://www.xtra.co.n...1916458,00.html

2. Boot into safemode to do this keep tapping F8 on your keyboard while your PC is starting up you will get a menu select safemode.

3. While in safemode open Hijackthis and click scan. Then tick and fix the following in Hijackthis with all windows closed except Hijackthis.

TheRock247uk,

I did what you advised, and the '03 - toolbar: Norton Antivirus' went away, but the 013 - DefultPrefix remained.

A technical saavy friend of mine then told me to do the following:

In HijackThis, fix:

O6 - HKCU\Software\Policies\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Control Panel present

Use a remove.reg file against the registry contining the following:
REGEDIT4

[-HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\URL]
[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\URL]
[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\URL\DefaultPrefix]
@="http://"
[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\URL\Prefixes]
"ftp"="ftp://"
"gopher"="gopher://"
"home"="http://"
"mosaic"="http://"
"www"="http://"

After doing what you told me first, then his directions, I have the following results:

TheRock247uk, I'm sorry for using other advice, but I was starting to feel a little desperate. I really appreciate your help.

BTW, Cleanup! removed some .SYS, .INI, .DLL, .DAT, .CHK, a lot of personal backups (I had named with .BAK), some Quicken files - .QDT, and quite a few .TMP files in the Windows and System32 directories. I saved the log. Should I worry about some of this 'seemingly' important stuff, or just trust the program to not remove anything vital?

Do you think it's now safe to upgrade this machine to XP SP2?

Thanks.

Your log is clean :tazz:

Here are some tips, to reduce the potential for spyware infection in the future, I strongly recommend installing the following applications:
  • Spywareblaster <= SpywareBlaster will prevent spyware from being installed.
  • Spywareguard <= SpywareGuard offers realtime protection from spyware installation attempts.
  • How to use Ad-Aware to remove Spyware <= If you suspect that you have spyware installed on your computer, here are instructions on how to download, install and then use Ad-Aware.
  • How to use Spybot to remove Spyware <= If you suspect that you have spyware installed on your computer, here are instructions on how to download, install and then use Spybot. Similar to Ad-Aware, I strongly recommend both to catch most spyware.
To protect yourself further:
  • IE/Spyad <= IE/Spyad places over 4000 websites and domains in the IE Restricted list which will severely impair attempts to infect your system. It basically prevents any downloads (Cookies etc) from the sites listed, although you will still be able to connect to the sites.
  • MVPS Hosts file <= The MVPS Hosts file replaces your current HOSTS file with one containing well know ad sites etc. Basically, this prevents your coputer from connecting to those sites by redirecting them to 127.0.0.1 which is your local computer
  • Google Toolbar <= Get the free google toolbar to help stop pop up windows.
I also suggest that you delete any files from "temp", "tmp" folders. In Internet Explorer, click on "Tools" => "Internet Options" => "Delete Files" and select the box that says "Delete All Offline Content" and click on "OK" twice. Also, empty the recycle bin by right clicking on it and selecting "Empty Recycle Bin". These steps should be done on a regular basis.
