Hello I am having troubles with my Windows Defender from operating properly, it says it will not start.

I keep receiving a Error that persists when trying to run Windows Defender which is: This operation returned because the timeout period expired. (error 0x800705b4)

I did: sc start WinDefend Enable in Command Prompt and received this response:

SERVICE_NAME: WinDefend
        TYPE               : 20  WIN32_SHARE_PROCESS
        STATE              : 2  START_PENDING
                                (NOT_STOPPABLE, NOT_PAUSABLE, IGNORES_SHUTDOWN)
        WIN32_EXIT_CODE    : 0  (0x0)
        SERVICE_EXIT_CODE  : 0  (0x0)
        CHECKPOINT         : 0x0
        WAIT_HINT          : 0x7d0
        PID                : 3512
        FLAGS              :

I also tried to use Windows Update and install any optional updates to make sure I am fully updated but when trying to install MSE ( Microsoft Security Essentials ) I got the 2 Errors for each one:

Code: 8004FF91
Code: 80070103

72ddc8f1b06ade910024f8206b755053.png

I cancelled the one as I knew it would cancel like the other one, that could be my arrogance but I am sure it won't install like the other times I tried.

Before trying to use Windows Update I ran:

sc stop wuauserv
rd /s /q "C:\Windows\SoftwareDistribution"

and Rebooted my PC.

Still no luck as you can see in the image above.

I have also ran MBAM here's the log for that:

I will need to have a look with a different scanner please

Please download Farbar Recovery Scan Tool and save it to your Desktop.

Note: You need to run the version compatible with your system. If you are not sure which version applies to your system download both of them and try to run them. Only one of them will run on your system, that will be the right version.
  • Right click to run as administrator (XP users click run after receipt of Windows Security Warning - Open File). When the tool opens click Yes to disclaimer.
  • Select additions at the bottom
  • Press Scan button.
    frst.JPG
  • It will produce a log called FRST.txt in the same directory the tool is run from.
  • Please attach both logs generated.

MSE is reporting an installation error as there is a problem with defender (they are two different programmes )

Could you download a fresh copy from here to your desktop http://www.microsoft...ls.aspx?id=5201

After the FRST fix try to install it

CAUTION : This fix is only valid for this specific machine, using it on another may break your computer

Open notepad and copy/paste the text in the quotebox below into it:

HKLM\SOFTWARE\Policies\Microsoft\Internet Explorer: Policy restriction <======= ATTENTION

Save this as fixlist.txt, in the same location as FRST.exe

There is an exceedingly long thread on this at TechNet where MS has not come up with a definitive answer however, there is one possible solution

Uninstall update KB3004394.
Reboot.
Install MSE.

There was one other solution that worked, install another AV although I guess you would like to keep MSES

To uninstall KB3004394 :

Go to Control Panel > Programs and Features
On the left click "Installed updates"
In the next window locate KB3004394
Once found then uninstall by double clicking

Ok, it seems that my Windows Defender is working properly, as well MSE was successfully installed. Is there anything else needed to do? And also are you able to tell me what caused this issue so I can prevent any other time.

Evidently this problem has been occurring over the last two years and yet MS has not identified what the problem is.

Your computer had a little adware on it but nothing dramatic :)

How is the computer behaving now ? Any further anomalies ?

Oh it has been behaving really good no issues really except when I saw that Windows Defender off I was a bit worried but I am glad it wasn't a huge issue or any Malware/Virus on my PC. I am surprised my Computer had any Adware as I try to keep it pretty clean from anything really.

I do have a question and don't know if you would be able to answer but I been having where my PC freezes at the Splash screen every once in a while but I have to restart my PC to let it run again normally. I have read that it could be due to my CMOS Battery being low on voltage but I haven't got around to changing the battery so I just like to know if you had anything you could say about this issue?

Alas I know little about the hardware side so I would rather not hazard a guess

But maybe cut down the number of startup programmes to the bare minimum you need as sometimes there may be an initial conflict when two programmes start

Subject to no further problems :)

I will remove my tools now and give some recommendations, but, I would like you to run for 24 hours or so and come back if you have any problems

Now the best part of the day ----- Your log now appears clean

A good workman always cleans up after himself so..The following will implement some cleanup procedures as well as reset System Restore points:

Remove tools

Download and run Delfix

delfix.JPG

: Keep Java Updated :

WARNING: Java is the #1 exploited program at this time. The Department of Homeland Security recommends that computer users disable Java
See this article

I would recommend that you completely uninstall Java unless you need it to run an important software.
In that instance I would recommend that you disable Java in your browsers until you need it for that software and then enable it. (See How to diasble Java in your web browser and How to unplug Java from the browser)

If you do need to keep Java then download JavaRa
Run the programme and select Remove Java Runtime. Uninstall all versions of Java present
Once done then run it again and select Update Java runtime > Download and install Latest version
javara.JPG

Now that you are clean, to help protect your computer in the future I recommend that you get the following free programmes:

CryptoPrevent install this programme to lock down and prevent crypto ransome ware

CryptoPrevent.JPG

Malwarebytes.

Update and run weekly to keep your system clean

Unchecky

Click on the link above to be taken to Unchecky.com
click the very large Download button.
click Save
Click Open folder
Right click on the Unchecky_setup and choose to Run as Administrator
Once open click the Install button.
Then click on Finish
Unchecky is now installed and will help you keep unwanted check boxes unchecked, this is a fire and forget programme ;)

It is critical to have both a firewall and anti virus to protect your system and to keep them updated.
