This is a specification of a computer I want to use for high-end gaming, primarily and coincided with working with coding.

Motherboard: ASUS® P9X79 LE: INTEL® SOCKET LG2011
Memory (RAM): 8GB KINGSTON HYPER-X BEAST DUAL-DDR3 2133MHz X.M.P (1 x 8GB)
Graphics Card: 4GB NVIDIA GEFORCE GTX 970 - 1 DVI, 1 mHDMI, 3 mDP - 3D Vision Ready
Hard Disk: 1TB 3.5" SATA-III 6GB/s HDD 7200RPM 32MB CACHE
Optical Drive: 24x DUAL LAYER DVD WRITER ±R/±RW/RAM
Power Supply: CORSAIR 750W CS SERIES™ MODULAR 80 PLUS® GOLD, ULTRA QUIET

Does anyone see any problems with this build? Or any parts which are inconsistent or just plain bad?

Processor (CPU): Intel® Core™i7 Quad Core Processor i7-4820K (3.7GHz) 10MB Cache This is dated now and for what you are paying out on the build you should be going forward with a Haswell CPU at least.

 

ASUS® P9X79 LE: INTEL® SOCKET LG2011 Same as above,

 

8GB KINGSTON HYPER-X BEAST DUAL-DDR3 2133MHz X.M.P (1 x 8GB) Dual channel Ram works best when used in matching pairs + single 8GB sticks should be avoided because if it goes bad you cannot use the computer, go for 2 Xs 4GB sticks and if one goes bad you still have one that will allow the computer to be used while a replacement stick is obtained, this particular stick was compatible with the MB but not the selected CPU as its limits are DDR3-1333/1600/1866 see CPU specs here

 

Hard Disk: 1TB 3.5" SATA-III 6GB/s HDD 7200RPM 32MB CACHE Go for the 64MB Cache as the prices are similar or less but the performance better.

 

Power Supply: CORSAIR 750W CS SERIES™ MODULAR 80 PLUS® GOLD, ULTRA QUIET Very good but for almost the same cost you can get a Corsair HX750 that has a seven year warranty as opposed to the 3 year warranty that the CS750M has + the HX750 has a zero rpm fan that shuts off completely when not required, the Corsair RM750 also has the zero rpm feature but only has a 5 year warranty, HX750 PSU here

With that in mind, then a Intel® Core™i7 Quad Core Processor i7-4790k (4.0GHz) would be more suitable?

I've also decided to change the hard drive to "2TB 3.5" SATA-III 6GB/s HDD 7200RPM 64MB CACHE" So now it has a 64Mb cache, for not very much price impact

Along with getting a HX750 Power supply.

 

However, I'm quite stuck on picking an up-to-date motherboard.

 

I'm looking at:

ASUS® Z97-A

ASUS® MAXIMUS VII GENE or ASUS® MAXIMUS VII RANGER

And Gigabyte Z97X Gaming 3

 

I'm not sure which one would be most suitable to my needs. I don't plan to crazy overclock. Which one out of those 4 would be best suited do you think?

For storage I use nothing larger than 1TB HDDs, too much hassle backing up all of the time + an awful lot of data to lose if the drive goes bad, I prefer and use an SSD for the OS and other most often used software and 1TB HDDs for data only storage, HDDs are relatively inexpensive atm and easy to fit as and when required along the way.

 

None of those boards for me but I am biased towards ASUS wireless capable MBs since my last build ASUS Z97-Pro Wi-Fi LGA 1150 ATX Intel Motherboard

I suppose I'll have to do some more researching into those motherboards then. I presume those motherboards are more up-to-date than the last one I previously was going to get.

 

I'll look into perhaps getting an SSD later down the line or even initially.

They are but for me nothing special, the board here for example you are paying over the top for the ROG tab, me I`d rather have an integrated wireless device and not have to pay out for an external one that gets in the way.

 

An SSD from the outset will avoid you having to reinstall Windows and all its updates again   

A 256GB Sandisk SSD will cost about $90 assuming that you are in the US.

An integrated wireless device would save some money, and cause less clutter. However, I can't get a wired connection in my house, plus the wireless I get is pretty weak with my current wireless card. Thus I'd want a relatively good wireless device, and I'd assume wireless cards are better than integrated wireless devices when it comes to connection.

 

I'm currently almost at the limit for my budget and an SDD doesn't seem to fit within it I'm afraid

 

I have been thinking that I could change the CPU down to a Intel Core i5 4690K, to squeeze in a GTX 980. I don't know how much trade off of performance that will have though.

Depends on the quality but fully understand if you have a poor wireless connection available to you 

 

Not sure what spec you need for your coding but a decent i5 CPU is plenty good for your gaming, benchmark results here

 

If you have a Micro Center store local to you the i5 4690k can be had for a bargain price, see here
