Alternative to Macbook Pro 15inch computer for college ?

I'm a Visual Arts major and according to my college, a Macbook pro is required. I do not have that kind of money and for my specific art concentration, I don't need that those specs. I'll just be using Adobe Photoshop and Lightroom and maybe Microsoft Office. I may use other programs but none too demanding.

 

I found some used ones for under $600 that are older. Battery life is terrible and some have around 320GB of space. I could be missing one so please share. I would just like a computer with at least 4GB or 6GB of ram, 15 inch or 17 inch screen, at least 500GB space or 1TB. It does not have to be an i7 processor if its a Windows computer..Budget under $800.
Not a fan of Windows 8, but it can still be an option.

Is the 15" MacBook Pro really required, or can I just get the lower-priced MacBook?
We have determined that the MacBook Pro is necessary to keep up with the demanding, processor intensive applications such as Final Cut and Adobe programs.
