Is there a program available which will record streaming video "directly" rather than recording the screen display. I am thinking of things like video conferencing where the displayed "incoming video" may be quite small, thus when the resulting video is played back, enlarging it produces a poor quality display

How are you viewing these video's please, are they via Skype or similar chat and video service, or are they showing in your browser?

If in your browser, they can be downloaded using a third party software such as Youtube Downloader or AVC..

However if they are showing in Skype or similar, I am not sure if they can be recorded. Also due to the fact that most video via Skype or other chat service is heavily compressed at source in order for it to stream easily, hence why it is a small picture and poor quality once enlarged.

In other words not a lot you can do at your end to get better quality, it is being sent as poor in the first place.

Have a look at both Youtube Downloader,

And AVC, which is actually a video converter but with the facilities to download from websites.

OK, thanks for that, try either of those two programs and see what result you get as they definitely will work in your browser.

A reminder to read carefully every small window that opens during the installation process and remove ticks from boxes for anything other than the program you want installed. If given a choice always use the custom or advanced method, as that is where they hide the unwanted extra's such as tool bars and other unwanted programs.

Hi Nev,

Thanks for the suggestions. I have looked at both of those but neither seem suitable. The youtube prog, needs a specific url to work, the other seems to be a screen capture program, similar to others which I have. One need for this is to record from a remote security camera which would be feeding to a window which could be in the background, thus I need to record the "stream" not the screen. There have been various other times when I would have found that facility useful.

I was thinking that it should be possible to record a video stream in the way that an audio recording program records whatever is going through the audio system.

To record directly from a camera, either security or a webcam, Windows own Movie maker will do that for you, you just use the webcam facility in it. If you don't have Windows Movie maker installed already, you can download it from Microsoft's site.

Otherwise, other third party video editors may have similar functions.

Windows Movie maker from here :-

The good thing about doing it with a video editor is that you can edit anything unwanted out before saving it.
