My Dell Vostro is giving lots of problems (mechanical not software)

I have some programs on my C drive that I will not be able to replicate. If I purchase a new computer with Windows 7 or 8 installed would I be able to install Vista OS and operate the old C drive as the primary drive.

I already have a cloned copy of my C drive in case I have a major failure.

If the drive is out of another OEM computer then not legally as the Vista OS is tied to the old computer. If it's a full retail version then yes, you should be able to install it in the new computer. You will probably have to do a Repair Install so it will run with the new hardware.
