So Advanced System Care is no good? Uninstall it? Everything else has been turned off.

I would strongly recommend uninstalling it.

No nothing else has to be turned off, I'll talk to you about msconfig, and all those things you have shut off. Don't do anything but what I tell you.

Well, I know you can control what is running in the background with it. That's how you turn things off that you don't want or need running all the time.

OK,

So you know how to go in there and shut things off.

The problem here is msconfig does not or was never meant to control start up programs even though every other internet site says it's fine to do. I say not to do it and so does Microsoft.

You have Malware locked in there now just one bit but it's there, and you have and Anti Virus program locked in there[AVG]. Once you stop those programs using msconfig, they may not uninstall correctly like AVG, and you can lock malware in too.

Turn these all back on by going into msconfig click start, type msconfig in the search box, open msconfig, click on the start up tab. Put a check mark in each entry, reboot the computer. We can turn the start up programs off another way, I'll give instructions for that when we finish.

I believe you that you shouldn't turn things off that way, but they did teach it that way in my hardware class in college last year. You would think they would know better seeing as this college was a Microsoft Certified college, where Microsoft gave us free software (including Windows 7 and Windows 8) to use on any build we created.

Anyway, so you want me to turn it all back on, right?

Why you should not be using MSconfig to control startups!!

Many people frequently use MSconfig as a long term solution to control startup processes and services. You will also see many websites condoning use of MSconfig and teaching you how to use it for controlling startups. This is a very bad idea for many reasons.

1 MSconfig was designed to be used only as a temporary debugging/troubleshooting tool. It was not meant to be used for long term solutions.
2 MSconfig does not show all startups anyway.
3 If you uninstall programs while they are being disabled with MSconfig, they will not be uninstall properly and you will have to resort to manual registry editing to properly get everything removed. MSconfig will leave orphan entries if/when installed software is uninstalled while under the control of MSconfig . When/if MSconfig is turned back to normal startup, it will give errors on boot due to those orphan entries.
4 MSconfig and Services:

  • If you uninstall programs while you have some of the programs services being controlled with MSconfig, the programs will not be uninstall properly and you will have to resort to manual registry editing to get everything properly removed.
  • When you uncheck a service in msconfig, you completely disable it. If you uncheck the wrong one, you may not be able to restart your computer.
  • It is safer to control services by using Control Panel, Administrative Tools,
Services (this runs services.msc).
5 You can lock malware items into your registry that you may not see anymore until some point in time where you switch back to Normal Startup mode and now you can cause total reinfection of your PC with the malware. You need to remove the malware not mask it.

If you still don't understand why not to use MSconfig, see what Microsoft writes here: http://support.microsoft.com/kb/310560 The key point is stated as such:
The System Configuration utility helps you find problems with your Windows configuration. It does not manage the programs that run when Windows starts.

Next

Yes turn it all back on, you're going to see Icons appear in the taskbar too because we are turning things back on. Then we will use a program called Hijackthis to turn things off the right way, and we will run the AVG Removal tool.

This maybe time consuming for you but I think it's a necessary step to do to put the computer in a normal operating mode.

Those first ones I listed are start up items (MSCONFIG\startupreg) I still have a list of services too that we need to do. Do the startups first, Ill give you the rest of the services when we get there.

We have a lot of work to do so please be patient.

Download HijackThis
  • Go Here to download HijackThis program
  • Save HijackThis to your desktop.
  • Right Click on Hijackthis and select "Run as Admin" (XP users just need to double click to run)
  • Click on "Do A system scan and save a logfile" (if you do not see "Do A system scan and save a logfile" then click on main menu)
  • copy and paste hijackthis report into the topic

OK, so do I put the checks in first or do the scan and then put the checks in?

Hello,

There's 2 scans we do with Hijackthis
1 A system scan and save a log file.
2 A system scan only.

So for you now:
Open Hijackthis

Do a system scan only, when the scan finishes, then place a check in each 04 Entry.
Once all the check marks are in place.
Click fix checked
Reboot.

Then
Do a system scan and save a log file and post that so we can see the 04's are fixed.
