Hi I have a problem.  My computer keeps displaying pink and green verticle lines accross the page.  They do at times go away but always come back after a few days.  There are currently 5 verticle lines going down the page.  They have a shape to the line block.  Kind of a white pattern through the pink lines and the green lines are made of the pattern with the gap showing the screen behind it.  The lines are around 6 cm wide.

When they first show up the entire screen is filled with the pattern in pink and white and then it turns into the pink and green block lines.  When you turn the machine on  and off they first show up again as red and white lines, in the same pattern as the pink and green I described earlier..  I am using windows 7 and have an acer aspire z computer.

When in this mode the sound is disabled and when the machine first boots up in a blue screen it says something about the display driver.

If anyone could assist in telling me what the problem is and how to fix it. It would be greatly appreciated.

Regards,Sharon

It appears the lines don't show up in screen shots.  Oh and one other things, the lines go away, like now for instance.  The other problem I'm having is the computer shuts down by itself sometimes taking a long time before I can get it to start again in safe mode.

Hope someone has some answers.

sharetie,

:welcome:

Few possibilities here, either the monitor, graphics card or the driver software for the graphics card. By just giving Acer Aspire Z few different model numbers listed. I believe may have the Intel HD Graphics 4600 for graphics.

Since it is a laptop if anyway connect another monitor to it, to see if issue goes away ? Also be due to bad graphics card or overheating issue, since get a BSOD (Blue Screen of Death) occassionaly.

Overheating, make sure fan are clean in system, but for this have to first make sure you hear them running and have to open back and use canned air to clean inside, might be complicated for some to do.

Make sure when using it, not blocking bottom with any materials (blanket, mattress..etc..)

Other suggestion if i am right about Intel Graphics card being Intel HD Graphics 4600. Go to Acer's site and download the latest driver software for your system and reinstall them. Now can go into the Device manager under Display adapters should tell you what name of brand graphics card. First two suggestions is update the driver and try to use a different monitor for awhile to see if it goes away.

Post back if need help with each step.

Thanks for replying.  First up the machine is an acer aspire z5610 all in one desk top.  The display adapter is an ATI Mobility Radeon HD4670, which I did look for an update for however they only seemed to have it for win 7 32 not 64 as I believe my machine to be.  The monitor I believe is fine as the lines come and go and when they go the picture on the screen is perfect. Its also a great picture behind the lines when they appear.

We are going to open the back of the machine and clean it with air as you suggested.  I have a feeling the problem has to do with heating and fans as its summer where I am and very hot some days 40 degrees.

I copied down for you the info that I get when the machine has suddenly stopped and then when I restart and get the blue screen, I did something a few weeks back to make the blue page stop so I could read what it says, so here goes.  Oh a couple of other things, when I tried to take a screen shot of the lines, they didn't come up in the picture, only the normal screen did.  I thought the problem began after doing a chrome update about 2 months ago.  When the problem occurs it disables my audio.  Sometimes I have no lines for a few days and other days happens non stop.  Once the lines have been on the screen for a while the computer will turn off completely, I do think that I may have a number of virus's.

Blue Screen Says

Attempt to reset the display driver and recover from time out failed.

If first time see stop error restart, if appearing again follow these steps.

Check any new software or hardware is installed properly.

If problem continues, disable/remove newly installed hardware or software.

Disable bios memory options, such as caching or shadowing if you need to use safe mode to remove or disable components.

Tech Info

*** stop:0x00000116 and other sets of numbers

*** atikmdag.sys - address FFFFF88004A9B7F8  then a pile of other sets of numbers

should you require the other lots of numbers please let me know and I will copy them all out for you.

Thanks and regards,  Sharon

sharon,

Your welcome.

It seems to me that it is your video drivers that are corrupted as atikmdag.sys is a file within the video card drivers from AMD which it the manufacturer of your ATI Mobility Radeon HD4670 video adapter.

First suggestion is to uninstall then reinstall new drivers for this adapter, had difficulty finding them, but i did here  http://support.amd.c...=Windows 7 - 64

Your system is 64bit. http://www.cnet.com/...re-z5610/specs/

Any other possibilities are corrupted Windows files, DirectX is corrupt or not up to date, Windows updates are missing, and or program on system is conflicting or corrupt.

Article here explains your error   http://support.amd.c...ormessages.aspx

Did you add any new hardware or change any other settings recently ?

Now you believe it is not the monitor, but it is always best to eliminate all possibilities. Try the Video adpater driver reinstall first, then we will go from there, hopefully that fixes the issue.

After you do this like you to try this, right click command prompt in programs, select run as administrator, copy paste this into the command prompt let it finish       sfc /scannow

Then do not close command prompt and copy paste this and let it finish                   dism /online /cleanup-image /restorehealth

Let me also know what SFC says afterwards. As this will attempt to fix any corrupt windows files.

Hi Jds63,

I wanted to thank you again for your help.  After updating the driver the lines went away.  They returned again recently so I ran the driver software suite again and they went away again.  I also took your advice and ran the sfc /scannow from the command prompt.

verification 100% complete

windows resource protection did not find any integrity violations

then ran dism/online/cleanup-image/restorehealth

said

deployment image servicing and management tool

version 6.1.7601.18489

error 87

the restore health option is not recognized in this context

I did notice that amd catalyst software suite contains a hydra vision package am  I also supposed to install that?

Hopefully the lines will stay away for good this time.

Again thanks for your help

Welcome back, your most welcome.

Hydravision is used for Multi-Monitor support, having more then one monitor hooked up, won't hurt to use it, but do not feel help your issue.

Worked with someone recently with an All-inOne PC very hard to troubleshoot hardware. Feel may not have another connection try another monitor, just to rule out the monitor as the  issue, even if you believe it's not, can be other hardware too.

At this point, wonder if recovering system will solve this or not, meaning reinstall windows 7, try check any display settings in Display in control panel. Make sure using default resolution for monitor also.

No exclamation points in Device manager, correct ? Let me look into this more again ,get back to this topic.

When you installed the AMD Graphics drivers, did you first uninstall the other ones, if not, try it again but follow this........

http://support.amd.c...ivers.aspx#Win7

Then reinstall new ones again.

Check version of DirectX on this laptop, should be DirectX 11.1

Click the Start button, type dxdiag in the search box, and then press Enter.
Asks you to check if want to check for Digitally signed drivers, select yes, now will open DirectX

First tab on bottom should tell you DirectX 11.1, go to 2nd tab Display, on bottom in box, any errors ?

This is the latest version of DirectX 11.1 for Windows 7    http://www.microsoft...s.aspx?id=36805

Chances DirectX files could be corrupted, reinstall it using this link, it will only overwrite what is already there if it's not corrupted, so no harm to system. Usually Windows 7 gets any updates for this from Windows update, but that was long time ago for this OS anyway.

Still could be another hardware issue, Video card, Power supply, even a conflict between drivers of other hardware (which with another on here i tried to help had All-in-One ,had no picture)

So i would also look to see if any new updates for drivers for your system. Refer to the update’s release notes to determine if it has a fix for your specific issue also.

Use this site to update any drivers for system, i tried but i did not have all info, needed serial number or other.   http://us.acer.com/a... aspire z5610;-

Just take a look at BIOS updates, tell me if shows what fixes they do fix, as telling you to try a BIOS update can be risky, so for now just want to know what might tell you, because in troubleshoot this issue mentions updating it.

Pretty much a lot of this was explained in this link i posted before about this Blue screen error. http://support.amd.c...ormessages.aspx

Last alternative could be to reinstall Windows 7, first try some of others i mentioned.
Some others here could be better at BSOD issue, have debugging tools to find out why.

As even on this site is good to use, see same issues  http://www.sevenforu...ikmdag-sys.html

Good forum, directed at your Operating system only.

Hi and thanks for all your help.   I think the problem may have been that I hadn't first uninstalled the amd card.  Did as you suggested and all seems to be running fine.  If I have further problems I will follow and try other suggestions.

again thanks so much for your help

regards,

Sharon
