Hi Geeks,

I run an electronics business from home. I come here regularly just to get an opinion from others. Everyone knows they are not always correct aand I like to make sure that what I am about to do will more than likely fix the issue.

So here is my issue:

A customer came in with a HP laptop. They had spilled coffee on the laptop. They said they cleaned it the best they could, but there is a problem with their screen. Everytime they moved the screen a little, it would completely screw up. Line go through the screen and makes it really hard to operate because you can not see what you are doing.

I am thinking a wire, although this started happening when they spilled coffee. Also, it doesn't matter what position it is in when you start it up, the screen works perfectly untill you tilt the screen. If you press the power button to put it into stand by and turn it on its fine again.

Any ideas?

The issue is possibly unrelated to the coffee spill as what you describe is a common symptom of a loose or damaged MB to screen video ribbon/cable, this can happen after nothing more than frequent everyday use but is most often caused by the notebook lid being opened too wide.

Thank you for the reply and That would make complete sense but I had an idea to test the VGA output and that worked fine. Except somewtimes it did exactly what the laptop screen did. It would get the lines through the screen.

I didn't see this mentioned in your OP so had no way of knowing that the issue was replicated on an external display  :(

If the lines appeared on the external display when the notebook screen was tilted it does suggest a loose wire/cable, it could be the video ribbon/cable being loose and coming into contact with the MB or notebook chassis or alternatively one of the wireless antenna cables doing the same thing, does the notebooks wireless device work ok.

Sorry it wasn't in the OP, I had tested it a little while after I had posted. About the Wifi working, it kept saying something about verifying please enter the security although I would enter it everytime and it wouldn't connect. Also, I left it for a little while and went to boot just now to tell you exactly what it was saying and it came up with the lines so I wouldn't have even been able to log into the laptop.

If you are able to start the computer without encountering the screen problem see if you are able to establish a wireless link between the notebook and the router, if you can it suggests that it is not the wireless antenna causing the screen problem.

The verifying message is most likely a software/security setting ( outside chance of a hardware issue ) but as you are already aware it cannot be looked into without a good display.

Alright, I will do that as soon as I get back home. Also, sorry for the late reply, I have been very busy lately.

I am very sorry about the extremely long delay, I have been very busy with school and life. so here is the newest update!

Once I got a chance to look more at the laptop, I realized that the laptop would not turn on anymore without the screen completely screwing up. I took the display off the hinges and left everything attached, then booted the laptop. The screen worked perfectly and I could even move it around. I put he laptop back together completely and I have only had one issue with the screen after that. The laptop does connect to the internet without any problems. I would really like to get this laptop back to its normal working condition.

Thank you for taking the time to respond to my post and also for being patient during the long delay in my forum activity.

If you can check the cable between the laptop base, motherboard, and the lid, may involve removing it again, check for tiny nicks or cracks in the insulation of all cables. If it shorted to something once, it can do it again. Once it is found where the problem is, a temporary repair might work with insulation tape. Though ideally the cable, if damaged, should be replaced if only for peace of mind.

Not heard from you for some time ProgramGeeks, do you still require assistance or is the issue now resolved, an update would be appreciated.
