it takes time to open any kind of file (pdf, excel,word) or to save files.

internet is slow when I open up new windows, or the website has many photos. Also, Chrome tends to send me an error message when I try to open the browser for the first time after turning on the laptop. So I need to try to open Chrome several time until it works properly. 

When i shut down the laptop it shows a warning that programs are still running and I might lose information, but already I closed everything before shutting down. 

 

I know I have all those browsers on my laptop, but I use only Chrome. Do I have to follow your instructions with all the 3 browsers?

Lets do some non-malware troubleshooting. 

 

STEP 1
 Creating System Restore Point (W7/Vista)

• Click the Windows Start Button . Right-click Computer and click Properties.
• Click System protection in the panel on the left. 
• Click the System Protection tab, followed by Create.
• In the System Protection dialog box, type a description, and click Create.
• Upon completion, close the window.
   

STEP 2
 CHKDSK

• Note: If you have a Solid State Drive (SSD), do not run CHKDSK. Skip STEP 2, and proceed with STEP 3.
• Click Start and type CMD in the Search Bar. Right-Click CMD.exe and select  Run as administrator.
• In the command window type the following and press Enter on your keyboard.

  chkdsk c: /r

• If you are prompted to schedule CHKDSK to run the next time the computer restarts, type y and press Enter on your keyboard.
• Type Exit and press Enter on your keyboard.
• Restart your computer. CHKDSK will automatically run.
• Note: This process can take up to an hour. 
• Press the Windows Key  + r on your keyboard at the same time. Type eventvwr.msc and click OK.
• Click Windows Logs.
• Right-click Application and click Find.
  • If CHKDSK ran within Windows (you didn't have to restart the computer), type Chkdsk into the text field and click Find Next. The log should appear. Highlight the text, Copy and paste in your next reply.
  • If CHKDSK ran after a restart, type Winlogon (XP) / Wininit (Vista/7) / Chkdsk (8) into the text field and click Find Next. The log should appear. Highlight the text, Copy and paste in your next reply.

STEP 3
 System File Checker (SFC)

• Press the Windows Key  + r on your keyboard at the same time. Type Notepad and click OK.
• Copy the entire contents of the codebox below and paste into the Notepad document.

• Locate querysfc.bat  (W8/7/Vista) on your Desktop. Right-click the icon and click  Run as administrator.
• Upon completion, a log (sfcresults.txt) will open on your Desktop. Copy the contents of the log and paste in your next reply.

I followed step 1 but at step 2 I did not restart the computer immediately because I was working on some dataset at that time. When I restarted the laptop nothing happened..it didn't take long at all and I don't find the log either. Should I start step 2 all over again?

Lets test your computer performance in the following environments. 
 
STEP 1
 Boot into Safe Mode

• Restart your PC.
• As soon as the BIOS is loaded, begin repeatedly tapping the F8 key until the Advanced Options menu appears.  
• Using the arrow keys, select Safe Mode. 
• Press the Enter key.
• Test your computer performance. 
• Reboot normally into Windows. 
   

STEP 2
 Clean Boot

• Press the Windows Key  + r on your keyboard at the same time. Type msconfig and click OK.
• If prompted for an administrator password or for confirmation, type the password, or provide confirmation.
• In the General tab, click Selective Startup.
• Remove the checkmark next to Load startup items.
• Click the Services tab.
• Place a checkmark next to Hide all Microsoft services.
• Click Disable all, followed by OK.
• When prompted, click Restart and boot normally into Windows.
• Test your computer performance.
   

STEP 3
 Normal Boot

• Press the Windows Key  + r on your keyboard at the same time. Type msconfig and click OK.
• If prompted for an administrator password or for confirmation, type the password, or provide confirmation.
• In the General tab, click Normal Startup, followed by OK.
• When prompted, click Restart and boot normally into Windows.

As soon as you switch your computer on, or your computer restarts, repeatedly tap the F8 key on your keyboard. The advanced options menu should appear.

sorry Adam for the late reply, I had some mice issues going on in the last couple of days.. 

to be honest i didn't see any big difference after any of the steps. it was a bit faster after the safe mode though. Could it be just slow because it is an old machine? i have been using it for 5 years now.

No worries about the delay.
 
Slowness can be caused by a variety of issues, including the age of the machine. Unfortunately, finding the cause is not necessarily a straight forward process, and can take time. And on top of that, a successful result is not always guaranteed. 
Ultimately, how we proceed is up to you. I'm happy to continue troubleshooting the cause of the slowness, but if you're satisfied with the state of things we can wrap things up.
