What's up with Virus Scan?

Please don't flame me for asking this question, because I hate Network Assoc. as much as the next person, BUT after reading a "rescue" post by Justin (JFCap) who is a genius, BTW, he recommended Active Scan.

I am running it as I type this message, and it already found 23 infected files!

Why doesn't Virus Scan catch these infected files? I'm religious to the updates.
