I was having alot of aim.exe error messages and virus warnings from Norton. They seemed to be on hold for now, but things are still very s..l..o...w and I am having trouble backing things up to CD now. Can anyone tell from this log what is going on? THanks!

Unfortunately, it's a nasty worm causing your problems.

Before I can help you clean your system, I need you to download Service Pack 1 otherwise cleaning your system will be a waste of time for both of us.

I'm sorry to hear that! But your system is definitely clean now. You need to go to the microsoft website and download Service Pack 2 immediately otherwise your system will become infected with all kinds of nasty stuff.

Click on "Windows Update" on the left side, then choose "Express Install" to install the latest security updates.

I'm going to go ahead and give you my recommendations on keeping your system clean:

Here are some tips, to reduce the potential for spyware infection in the future, I strongly recommend installing the following applications:

Ewido Security Suite <= Protection against Trojans, Worms, Dialers, Hijackers, Spyware, and Keyloggers.

Detect and Remove Programs:
  • How to use Ad-Aware to remove Spyware <= If you suspect that you have spyware installed on your computer, here are instructions on how to download, install and then use Ad-Aware.
  • How to use Spybot to remove Spyware <= If you suspect that you have spyware installed on your computer, here are instructions on how to download, install and then use Spybot. Similar to Ad-Aware, I strongly recommend both to catch most spyware.
Prevention Programs:
  • Spywareblaster <= SpywareBlaster will prevent spyware from being installed.
  • Spywareguard <= SpywareGuard offers realtime protection from spyware installation attempts.
  • MVPS Hosts file <= The MVPS Hosts file replaces your current HOSTS file with one containing well known ad sites etc. Basically, this prevents your computer from connecting to those sites by redirecting them to 127.0.0.1 which is your local computer
  • Google Toolbar <= Get the free google toolbar to help stop pop up windows.
Other necessary Programs:
  • Firewall<= A firewall is definitely a must have. Three good free versions are Sygate, Kerio, and ZoneAlarm.
    *NOTE* If you choose to use one of these firewalls, you will need to disable the windows firewall that comes with Service Pack 2.
