Hi!  I have been keyword searching and trying to self analyze, but as you can imagine, it's like herding cats trying to find consistent & comprehensive information all in one place.  So....as you might imagine, I was all excited when I stumbled across this forum! I'm a firm believer in first trying to find information yourself before wasting the time of others.  But, I've done as much myself as I'm comfortable with - and my eyes are exhausted hopping from one webpage to another as I'm googling things....lol.

I did see a post where you asked for some specific things before you could offer your expertise, so I hope I am posting this correctly. I also tried to give as much info in my specs profile that I thought you might need.  I had to abbreviate a bunch of stuff.  If some of it is totally irrelevant to you, I can delete.

One other piece of advice I would appreciate is: do you have a recommendation of a tutorial or website/link that can help me understand my performance readings?  The Task Manager has all of this great information that I have no idea how to interpret. (e.g., the moving green and blue CPU graphs, %'s of various memory and CPU readings, why the Process screen in Task Manager hops around non-stop, what the various colors mean that are within the same box, and in the Resource Monitor.....where in the heck does the Monitoring Recordings get stored?  I'm assuming that since there is a start and a stop, there is somewhere that I can retrieve it should I need advice or to to evaluate?).  Basically, I just want a tutorial resource that can break it all down for me so that I can understand it myself or at least not sound like a moron when I'm trying to discuss it...lol

So - now that I just exhausted you with my drawn out inquiries, I'll paste the information.  What can I disable, delete, modify to optimize my performance? I am getting rid of Norton.  My company requires TrendMicro if I want to remote or VPN in, should I not have my work laptop with me.  Thank you so much!!!

The info is both attached and pasted below.  I know people have various reading preferences.  Please let me know if I shouldn't do one or the other. :)

:welcome:    awriternot,

Please follow the directions provided below starting with Autoruns

1: Extract the Autoruns Zip file contents to a folder.

2: Double-click the "Autoruns.exe".

3: Click on the Filter out Microsoft & Windows results.

4: Go to File then to Export As or Save in some versions.

5: Save AutoRuns.txt file to known location like your Desktop.

6: Attach it to your next reply.

Autoruns Tutorial

2nd: Download and run TFC the computer should automatically re-boot on completion but if not do it manually.

3rd: Defrag your HDD with Auslogic (free) please note that I am not suggesting that you use any other product or service at the link.

Couple of other things to consider are what size HDD do you have and how much free storage space is available, you should always have between 15 and 20% of the overall capacity available, do not have more than 1 AV program running as it causes slowness as the programs fight for control of system resources, this can lead to instability and/or crashes.

What AV do you use, some use a lot more system resources than others Norton and AVG are excellent but very demanding.

To speed up your boot times find any unnecessary programs linked to start up "how to" below;

Go to Start, type MSCONFIG into the search field/box and then press Enter.

Click on the start-up Tab.

Look at each line that has a check in the box, these are start-up items, with the exception of Windows programs and your AV software uncheck the ones you do not want to run at start-up.

Thank you so much! I bookmarked the site so I could come back and then it got lost in my bookmarks! LOL  I'm attaching it but let me know if I should copy and paste the results instead.

Can you tell from this data what I can disable and/or delete? The computer is virtually brand new, I just want to get rid of unnecessary bloatware and start up stuff.

AV - Trend Micro Maximum (required by work) - I removed Norton.

Specs:

OS - 8.1 ; 6.3.9600 Build 9600- x64
Satellite C55-B; SKU - PSCMLU
® Celeron® CPU N2830 @ 2.16GHz, 2159 Mhz, 2 Core(s), 2 Logical Processor(s)
BIOS - TOSH1.40, 7/25/2014; SMBIOS Vs.- 2.8
Embed Contr- 1.40; BIOS Mode- UEFI
PCR7 Config- N; Hrdw Abstract Layer- Vs. = "6.3.9600.17196"
RAM- 4.00 GB; Tot lhy Memory- 3.89 GB; Avlb Phys Memory- 1.27 GB
Tot Virt Memory- 6.72 GB; Avlb Virtl Memory- 2.98 GB

Do you also have recommendation of a tutorial or website/link that can help me understand my performance readings?  The Task Manager has all of this great information that I have no idea how to interpret:

·         How to read the moving green and blue CPU graphs;

·         %'s of various memory and CPU readings;

·         Why the Process screen in Task Manager hops around non-stop;

·         What the various colors mean that are within the same box and in the Resource Monitor; and

·         Where in the heck do the Monitoring Recordings get stored?  I'm assuming that since there is a start and a stop, there is somewhere that I can retrieve it should I need advice or to evaluate?

Basically, I just want a tutorial resource that can break it all down for me so that I can understand it myself or at least not sound like a moron when I'm trying to discuss it...lol

In order to help you get rid of the OEM bloatware, we need to know what's installed on it :)

3Al62Pm.pngList Installed Programs
  • Download MiniToolBox and move it to your Desktop;
  • Execute it by double-clicking on it;
  • Check the "List Installed Programs" checkbox;
    dE2KOUZ.png
  • Click on the Go button;
  • Once the scan is complete, a log will open.
    wRKHMXW.png
  • Copy/paste (select the Notepad, press Ctrl + A then Ctrl + C to copy, and Ctrl + V to paste) the content of the output log in your next reply;

Also, to address your Task Manager questions, almost nobody talks about the graphs, colors, etc. so its not needed to learn about them, but if you really want to I can tell you :P
