Hey all, eversince last December I've been getting popups telling about a harddrive failure and to back up my information. I believed it to be malware at first or a virus though it might be something more.

Any help would be appreciated.

Hi Lucky Dearly :)

Let's check if your HDD is indeed failing or if it's "malware related" like you said.

OlT01aD.pngDxDiag Log
Follow the instructions below to create a dxdiag log and post it in your next reply.
  • Press on the Win Key + R keys to bring up the Run menu;
  • Enter dxdiag in the box and press on Enter;
  • If a message comes up asking you if you want to check if your drivers are digitally signed or not, click on Yes;
  • Once the dxdiag report window open, wait for it to load completely. The progress bar is in the bottom left corner;
  • Click on the Save All Information... button, then save the file on your Desktop as dxdiag.txt;
  • Open the text file, then copy/paste all the content in your next reply;

OPs computer given the all clear of malware by Biscuithd  here

Can we also take a look at Windows 7 Disk Manager;

1. Click on the Start button and then choose Control Panel.
2. Click on the System and Security link.
Note: If you're viewing the Large icons or Small iconsview of Control Panel, you won't see this link so just click on the Administrative Tools icon and skip to Step 4.
3. In the System and Security window, click on the Administrative Tools heading located near the bottom of the window.
4. In the Administrative Tools window, double-click on the Computer Management icon.
5. When Computer Management opens, click on Disk Management on the left side of the window, located under Storage.
After a brief loading period, Disk Management should now appear on the right side of the Computer Management window.
Note: If you don't see Disk Management listed, you may need to click on the |> icon to the left of the Storage icon.

To capture and post a screenshot;

Click on the ALT key + PRT SCR key..its on the top row..right hand side..now click on start...all programs...accessories...paint....left click in the white area ...press CTRL + V...click on file...click on save...save it to your desktop...name it something related to the screen your capturing... BE SURE TO SAVE IT AS A .JPG ...otherwise it may be to big to upload... then after typing in any response you have... click on browse...desktop...find the screenshot..select it and click on the upload button...then on the lower left...after it says upload successful...click on add reply like you normally would.

Screenshot instructions are provided to assist those that may read this topic but are not yet aware of the “how to”.

Yes I received a message from Biscuit telling me about the situation. He says that "hardware failure" isn't really is domain so he's leaving is to us, but I really doubt that this is malware-related :P We'll get the HDD manufacturer name, make the OP install the manufacturer HDD utility and see if it's failing or not :)

Can you take another screenshot, but this time with the second half of the window showing? Which means that you'll scroll down the bar in the second portion of the window.

It definitively look like your hard drive is dying and you'll need to replace it with a new one. Last test, credits to Alexstrasza for the canned and also showing me it.
Please download GSmartControl and save it to your Desktop.
  • Extract gsmartcontrol-0.8.7-win32.zip to a folder, double-click on gsmartcontrol.exe
  • A list of hard drives will appear, single-click each disk to see Drive Information and identify your drive
    note: most machines will only have one or two entries, but an easy way to identify your drive is by its size.
  • Double-click on the hard drive to see detailed Device Information
  • Click on the Attributes tab, do you see any red or pink entries like the ones below? Please list the names in your next reply if there are any.
    info_failing.png
  • Click on the Perform Tests tab
  • Select Extended Self-Test and click Execute
    note: this test can take several hours to run
  • Allow the test to complete, the results will be displayed at the bottom
  • Please post the result of the scan in your next reply

okay here's what I got. just to note when I began the program I got a basic health check failed message

Relocated Sector Count

Reallocation Event Count

Those two are the only ones in red and pink.

as for the test result it says "Test Result: Completed with with read failure. Check the self-test log for more information"

here's the log as well

Well your hard disk drive is indeed failing. I would suggest you to start backing up all your data to another storage device as soon as possible, and then order a new hard drive and swap it with the current one. You'll have to reinstall Windows on it as well.

ah okay, I've been backing up data as of late. I'll get the new hard drive once I can afford one.
