Hello guys

 

I really don't know what to do next.  I can't play videos on YouTube on my PC (Windows 7 Home Premium 64bit with Firefox as default browser).  However, I can play videos on Craftsy with no problems at all.  I can only play Videos on YouTube on my PC with IE 11 (which I hate and haven't used for years).   My huband's PC on the same broadband connection and running the same Firefox (35.0.1) also can play YouTube videos perfectly.  We're both connected to the router with ethernet cables.  I'm stumped.

 

When I try to play a video, the first few seconds play over again about 3 times, then I get  blackness with "an error occurred, please try again later.  Learn More" written in white text.  This started happening when we changed ISP's and our connection was very slow initially.  But now the speed is back to normal and so is everything else except this.  When it was slow I would click on refresh a few times and wait a few moments and the video would often start after a while.  I thought this problem would disappear with the speed improvement, but this is worse.  It won't even play when I refresh now.  Just a few seconds and then the error message again.

 

I've installed latest Graphics card driver.  No difference.

 

I've checked I've got the latest Flash player.

 

I've unchecked "enable hardware acceleration" on my Adobe Flash Player Youube settings.  No difference.

 

Have cleared cache and cookies.  No difference.

 

 Java is enabled on Firefox.  I even downloaded Safari to see if that would work but it didn't.

 

I can play them if I use IE but I don't want to use it, I can't stand it and having been away from it since version 5, I don't even recognise it anymore.  Can't find a google search bar on it and it just looks terrible.

 

I've noticed that other people are also having this problem, but I've tried the most commonly offered solutions and they haven't worked.

 

Any ideas what else I can do?  (please note that I'm not very techy-minded.  Can just about download drivers and stuff).

 

Thanks for reading.  I hope you can help.  (I did read some of the posts about this on the firefox forum, but they just recommended the things I've tried already or techy stuff I didn't understand).

List Installed Programs

• Download MiniToolBox and move it to your Desktop;
• Execute it by double-clicking on it;
• Check the "List Installed Programs" checkbox;
  
• Click on the Go button;
• Once the scan is complete, a log will open.
  
• Copy/paste (select the Notepad, press Ctrl + A then Ctrl + C to copy, and Ctrl + V to paste) the content of the output log in your next reply;

Aura, I don't know what Side by Side is, but I've had errors from that for months and months (maybe years?).  As my computer was working OK, I never worried about it.

 

Btw, could this be caused by YouTube, rather than Firefox?

 

EDIT TO ADD:

 

Aura, after doing the above I still had the same problem in YouTube, but I read something today on the Firefox support pages about disabling plug ins to see if they were the problem.  So just now I disabled all of them and I went to YouTube and the videos worked!  I don't really understand the concept of plug ins and don't know which are important and which aren't, but I assumed that Flash or Java were essential for watching YouTube or just browsing web sites.  Any thoughts?  Should I enable the plug ins one by one?   If so, should I do it in a certain order?

 

EDIT AGAIN:

Apparently I'm now watching with HTML5, whatever that means.

I can see that the plugin container process of Mozilla Firefox crashed, and that could explain why the videos aren't working. Also, where did you download the latest updates for your graphic card drivers?

Doh, I was just about to say I got the driver from NVIDIA's web site, but then I realised that they said I already had the latest driver.  The driver I updated was for my Intel Gigabit Network Adapter and I got it from Intel's own site.  Sorry, I've been doing so much on this PC the last few days I'm getting confused (it's also way past my bedtime, after I've posted this I'm going to bed - please don't think I'm not grateful for your help because I am!)

But I just found a YouTube forum (didn't even know they had one) and there is a 9 page thread about this problem that's been going for a while.  Someone working for YouTube posted on there that they were aware of the issue and working on it.  The last post on that thread was 26th January.  I hope I'm not wasting your time with this, maybe it's YouTube's problem?

 

I was going to post a link to the thread but I went off the page and now I can't find it again.  I'll try tomorrow, there must be a lot of people in the same boat as me.

Alright, enable all your plug-ins, except for:

Open H264 Video Codec provided by Cisco Systems inc 1.1
Shockwave Flash 16.0.0.296

And see if the Youtube videos are still working. Also the Shockwave Flash Player plugin is outdated since the current version is 12.1.6.156.

Done that.  YouTube still working and playing the videos in HTML5 (what the flip is that?).  I checked on Craftsy as well and those videos are still working (they always did).

 

Should i go and update the Flash player or leave it for now?

Youtube now forces the use of HTML5 instead of Flash Player, and it's recent from a day or two, so that could be it. I suggest you to leave it as it is, since HTML5 is more secure than using Shockwave Player. You can re-enable the Open H264 Video Codec provided by Cisco Systems inc 1.1 plug-in and you should be good to go

Also, when I'm enabling these plug ins should I choose "always activate" or "ask to activate"?  Is one better than the other?  When I enabled them this morning I chose "always activate" but I think some of them were on "ask" before.

For security concerns, I would choose Ask to activate. This way, if you go on a website and it asks to activate a random plug-in (or one that it have no use for), it could ring a bell that this website could be malicious. And it's better to leave Adobe Flash Player always disabled, and only enable it when you really need it (once again, for security concerns).
