Hi everyone,

 

I just got back from deployment, to a very anxious 6 year old who is now required to do work on the internet for school.  (I mean WTH 1st grade i thought we were barely reading, but that was a long time ago and I digress)

 

So basically I need a computer that will do basic word processing and web surfing.  But, since I am upgrading I would like it to play the newer games at a playable resolution.  There is no need for max fps in games and I will not be folding.

 

This is what i know is in my machine atm and can get other requested components tonight after work.

 

Coolermaster Mystique case

AMD 6000 x2

Ati Radeon 1900 xt

2x Maxtor 500GB

1x Seagte 750 GB

Asus DVD reader

Lite-on DVD Burner

8GB of generic ram

Microsoft Ergo 4000 keynoard

Logitech corded Laser mouse (the one with the adjustable weight block)

Viewsonic 22" Widescreen monitor

 

I would like to keep the build in the 500-650 range, and can reuse any or none of the components

 

I have been out of the game for a while now and have no idea what is out there

 

Also i will need to get a new OS as all i have is XP Pro.  Which do you guys recommend 7 or 8? Home or PRo?

Hello, just adding my 2 cents.

Your build sounds decent as is; definitely enough for the kid's homework.  As far as the gaming goes:

1) A dual-core processor can work, as long as it's at least 6GHz total.  For example, mine is a dual-core 3.5GHz, so that totals up to 7GHz.  A quad-core anything will work.  I'm looking at octo-core (8 cores with 4GHz, each) on newegg.com right now for less than $200.

2) A lot of your built-in graphic cards in mobos over the past 3-4 years are capable of running newer games (granted, you may have to turn the graphics down some).  I'm not familiar with the model you're currently using, but I'm pretty sure as long as you keep the dust off of the fans (and out of the tower, period) then you can probably skip by on that.  If you insist on getting a new one, it shouldn't run you more than $200.

3) If one of your hard-drives isn't already, I would upgrade it to an SSD.  Ideally, you'll want to have your OS, paging file, etc. on the old/mechanical drive.  Have the [new] SSD dedicated to the gaming files.  The prices of SSDs have come way down over the last few years.  If you're only going to have a few games, you may not need more than a 250GB SSD.  If you wanted to go with a 500GB drive, that would probably cost you right at $200 as well.

4) I prefer Windows 7, for many reasons.  In your case, the Home Edition would cover everything you need.  You will definitely want to upgrade from XP, as it is a security risk since it's no longer supported by Microsoft.

These are the parts that may transfer to a new build.

Are the Optical drives and HDD SATA interface?

What model number is the case, 621/632?? How many fans installed.,

Brand/model of the PSU please.

Sorry for the delay.
The power supply is an antec true power trio 650
Both optical and all three hd's are SATA. I am not sure what what model the case is, it is about 6.5 yrs old and has 2 fans one on the front and and one on the back. The front has 2 doors that close to cover the drives with a big blue led. Let me clarify, I would like to not have to upgrade for a couple of years and still play the new stuff. There is a microcenter but it is like 50 min away

I agree with Fusionbomb, your build is OK for your stated requirements.

PSU will be OK and also the drives.  Only worth a trip to Macro if you were building a new rig.

I would install a 250GB SSD, but as you won't be into heavy gaming, use it for the OS and programs.   Move your user Data to one HDD, your child's to another and use the third one for backups.

Upgrade the GPU to a Nvydia GTX 750 ti or 960.

Both parts could be used in a new build at a later date.

OS, Windows 8.1, reasons, you will be learning a new OS, W7 support will end soon so better to go to W8,1, I think it will also be easier transitioning to W10, out this year.
