Thanks in advance for any assistance offered. I got a blue screen with Trojan-spy.html.smit.fraud.c and googled for assistance. Downloaded an anti-virus solution (Xoftpro) and it detected it and after deleting I now have a black screen. Googled again and found this forum. I've taken every step described in the malware removal thread and unfortunately am still stuck. I must use Task Manager to launch any tasks and everything seems to work, but the desktop is gone. Can anyone offer advice?

Is that the accurate name for the antiviral that you downloaded and used? I did a search and can't find the product.

Please find the spelling and post it back when you complete the following steps.

I see you have several antiviral products running. Norton, AVG and Ewido. Did you just use the 14-day trial of Ewido or is it permanent? Is one of them your firewall? Please only use one anti-viral product. If the Ewido is the trial version, leave it. If Norton and AVG are running, please get rid of one.

There are quite a few programs available that offer protection features to help keep a computer from getting infected. While this is normally a helpful feature, it can keep a victim from making the changes necessary to clean their comptuer. Please read the following and uninstall or disable those that apply to your machine.

These programs need to be uninstalled

AdWatch

These programs can just be disabled

Microsoft Antispyware
TeaTimer
SpySweeper
Win Patrol
Spyware Guard
Pestpatrol
Regrun
Diamonds Process controler

Since you said you had the smitfraud virus, I am going to have you complete this fix. Xosoft may have gotten rid of it, but I'd rather be safe than sorry. :tazz:

Please read these instructions carefully and print them out! Be sure to follow ALL instructions!

Please RIGHT-CLICK: HERE and go to Save As (in Internet Explorer it's "Save Target As") in order to download Grinler's reg file. Save it to your desktop.

Locate "smitfraud.reg" on your desktop and double-click it. When asked if you want to merge with the registry, click YES. Wait for the "merged successfully" prompt then follow the rest of the instructions below.

Go to Start > Control Panel > Add or Remove Programs and remove the following programs, if found:

Security IGuard
Virtual Maid
Search Maid

Thanks so much for the start. One of the problems I've had is being unable to access Control Panel. With the black screen, I can't get to it to uninstall programs. I am using Task Manager to get to IE and such, but I can't find Control Panel. The product referenced was actually "XoftSpy" from a company called Pareto Logic. I'm printing these instructions and will follow them (with the exception of the stuff that requires accessing Control Panel).

Thanks again!

Please uninstall that program. It is listed as rogue spyware.
