Okay Im wanting to upgrade my cpu I learned that when you upgrade your cpu you tend to need to upgrade your motherboard as well I have an ASUS m6 motherboard and the only thing available would be a AMD phenom x4 that would have to be used. I have a motherboard and cpu picked out, I need to know for sure that it will work with all my existing parts and I wont run into having to repurchase windows parts not fitting etc.

This is what I want to upgrade too Cpu/motherboard wise. An intel i5 quad 3.5ghz and a standard MSI motherboard. I heard for gaming a quad is all you need and going for a 6 core isnt really worth it. I heard Intel out performs AMD. I mostly use my computer for games like WoW etc but i do play games off steam every now and then.

Wouldthis be my best option for an Upgrade? the i5 quad or are there cheaper or better options etc? And what do i need to look at when im replacing my motherboard/cpu is it just making sure that the motherboard has a PCI slot for my gtx 550 ti my psu is 750 so that should be more than enough.

Please help me guys! My budgets around 200$ to 300$.

:welcome: Sayburwulf\

If your existing OS is a OEM licencee version, it is tied to the MB it is first  installed on, so using any other MB would mean buying a new Windows OS.   If it is a Full Retail Version licence, you can install it on another MB.

To answer your questions about compatibility, please give us the brand/model of the MB, CPU, RAM and PSU.

In which country will you purchase parts?

we may find a upgrade to your isisting parts as $300 budget is very limiting.

Yes, If you want to be sure your RAM is compatible with the MB, download then run Speccy (free) and post the resultant url for us, details here,  this will provide us with information about your computer hardware, but not the PSU. Still need the brand/model to see if it is Haswell CPU ready.

Thanks for the info.

fyi.  A Intel build will give better performance for gamin than a AMD one, but i guess it is over budget.

The MB CPU you listed will work with your existing parts. but I think you can do better.

MB.   Older platform, socket AM3+ no support for pci-e 3.0 or integrated GPU, no future CPU releases.

Your MB, shows out of stock, found one > http://www.newegg.co...ID=3938566&SID=

CPU, You do not need a 8 cores for gaming, money saved can be used elsewhere in a build.

Your parts, > http://pcpartpicker.com/p/pQcZvK    $259.98

A different AMD, build to consider, > http://pcpartpicker.com/p/jv2KdC    $242.96

Includes 8GB of faster RAM as you existing is a bit low speed and quantity.

I can probably push higher to 1866 8gb ram thats fine. When I checked computer benchmarks it had intel i7s over the AMD FX-8350 it terms of performance but the AMD FX 8350 and the six core equilvilant top the charts in terms of value so I kinda want to stick with AMD the reason why I want to grab the eight core is so I can multitask without fear of slowing my gaming down run background stuff skype browsers music etc. The intel i5 i had picked out was a overclock version and Im still fairly a beginner so I dont need to touch overclocking yet. Lastly I dont do extreme hardcore gaming Battlefield 4 ultra high settings Crysis dragon age etc. I may buy some future games on steam again but i Doubt theyll be super cpu intensive if anything Im sure the FX 8350 will be able to handle it with the ram I get andmy gtx 550 ti I will also be looking to upgrade that later.

On the side note anyone know if it would be better to just get a second card and run 2 video cards or just scrap the 550 ti?

The first 3 pieces CPU motherboard and ram are what I want to upgrade those pieces are just the ones I picked out but I can still change around the parts. All the other parts are the actual parts I already have in my cpu. Also can anyone recommend a good cpu cooler and should I replace my PSU? Local computer shop kinda ripped me off with that thing. Its falsely advertised and poorly rated but so far its been doing fine for me.

http://pcpartpicker.com/p/R3wrhM What im Looking at currently will purchase the first four parts pcpart is saying I have no compatibility problems.

Are you within easy driving distance of a Macro Store?

FYI.   Using any different cooler from the stock one supplied with a boxed retail CPU, from both AMD and Intel, could void the 3 year warranty.   If you have to RMA the CPU and they become aware you have used a different cooler, your claim could be rejected.  The same rules apply to overclocking beyond the build in Turbo Boost.   I always advice to use the stock cooler to start with, and if you are really unhappy with the performance, you can, at your own risk, use an aftermarket one.

The Asus MB is not really robust enough, although good quality, the parts are lower spected than those on a 990FX one.

gone with a Asrock, costing $1 more than the one you listed.  > http://www.asrock.co...990FX Extreme6/

Changed the RAM for lower CAS latency, also colour matches the MB.

The only reason I swapped off the 970 mbs is cause the filter is saying it clashes with viscera GPus and I may need a bios update? Thanks for the info on coolers! Didn't know cpus came with a stock one.

Take e it from the thumbnail I should also get a new psu? I heard corsairs are good.

Also macro store=computer store? I am near a computer tech store but I feel there a big ripoff. Wanted to charge me 40$ extra dollars to download windows defender and a free word program back when my computers hard drive got replaced.

^^   No, only if you upgrade the GPU, yours only draws 9.6A.

Thats with a MSI  970 everytime its a 970 board and if it has USB 3.0 Headers I get this.

Compatibility Notes
  • MSI 970 GAMING ATX AM3+ Motherboard has an onboard USB 3.0 header, but the NZXT Gamma Classic (Black) ATX Mid Tower Case does not have front panel USB 3.0 ports.
  • Some AMD 970 chipset motherboards may need a BIOS update prior to using Vishera CPUs.

You will get "incompatible, no USB case header" on any build you configure as the case does not include one, does not stop you using the MB though.

  • Some AMD 970 chipset motherboards may need a BIOS update prior to using Vishera CPUs.
  • The Asrock listed is  Northbridge: AMD 990FX, so the CPU is supported without the need for a BIOS flash.   CPU support, > http://www.asrock.co...treme6/?cat=CPU

Ill grab the ASrock 970 Extreme 4 since its a little cheaper. What does it exactly mean when it says the error about USB 3.0 Headers and what does that mean for me?

Ready to order the parts?

On the front of your case you will have 1 + USB 2.0 sockets for plugging in things like a moue/keyboard. Many new case come with 1 + USB 3.0 sockets as well.

On the MB there are header (sockets) to plug in the cables from those case sockets.   For you, just use the USB 2.0 cables, the USB 3.0 header would not be used, computer functions just the same.

Yes, Decide which parts list you want and go ahead and order.

Couple of notes, Your parts list has 16GB of RAM listed,  You do not need 16GB of RAM, unless your are doing heavy video/photo editing, it will just sit there doing nothing, 8GB is all you need.

The OS is included.
