Try-start-run-msconfig-services-look for windows audio and any other sound related items-i,e-creative etc and enable-had same problem and now sorted-sure problem was last windows update.GOOD LUCK

1) Start
2) Control Panel
3) Add Hardware
4) Yes, I have already connected the hardware
5) Scroll all the way down "Add a new hardware device"
6) Install manually from list
7) Sound Video and Game Controllers
8) Media Control Devices

Worked like a charm!
